Exciting news! The full Michigan Senate passed a compromise version of SB 8 with a bipartisan majority. The bill now moves to the Michigan House for a vote. This is MAJOR progress and a BIG WIN for tipped workers! Stay tuned!

Today, our House Select Committee took a major step to protect workers and family-owned small businesses. I am grateful to the committee for its work, those who came to testify. Proud we could send such a strong, bipartisan message. gophouse.org/posts/represent…

Just in case you don’t fully understand how the tip-credit system works and why anyone would work for “sub-minimum wage”….this is why. Merit-based service provides merit-based rewards. These folks didn’t have to tip $40. Instead they choose to reward based on service expectations. Clearly we over-performed 😉 Now, do the math on the time it takes to open 2 Mich Ultras and you’ll quickly see what makes serving so lucrative for millions…mostly single mothers btw…on behalf of them I say “keep you f’ing hands off our paychecks!!!”

"They [servers] never asked for this change, and they make far beyond the $15 minimum wage, especially seasonally. People can work in summer peak shifts and make significant amounts of money, so if folks wanted to make a minimum wage, they likely wouldn’t be in this industry.”

They didn’t want this, and they didn’t ask for it! So many mothers rely on serving to support their families. By taking away tips, you are taking away the opportunity for them to provide for their families!

The man in the middle is Angelo Hawkins, who's been serving at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Rochester Hills for nearly 4 years. "I've said it multiple times today, we didn't ask for help, so why are you trying to make a decision on our lives without even considering to come to us?"

“The majority of my servers and bartenders are single parents, going to school. They work 20/25 hours a week, right? And they make 40k a year. In what industry can you do that unless you’re making tips?”

Gov. Whitmer, we heard you in 2022, now is the time to follow through! It's been two years, the time to take action and stand up for tipped workers is now. You said it yourself, there needs to be a fix to this law that will leave thousands of Michiganders jobless.

Michigan House Dems and Senate Dems shut the doors on constituents today who were there advocating for #savemitips Over 600 servers/bartenders/waiters/waitresses were in Lansing BEGGING the legislature to act to keep Michigan’s Tip Credit. Instead they closed their doors ignoring their pleas to keep their tips. Don’t take my word for it. Peep the video highlighting Michigan’s working families getting locked out for wanting to keep their tips.

"It's just sad to watch," said King, who works at the Peppermill Cafe Standale in Grand Rapids. She says waiting is her passion. She says removing tipped wages is "going to shut so many little mom-and-pop bars and restaurants down." "We've already lost so much through COVID."

After rallying in Lansing this morning to push for a change to Michigan's pending minimum wage/tipped wage laws, sounds like people with the group @SaveMITips are now chanting "save our tips" so loudly in the Senate that it's intermittently drowning out the Senate livestream.
