BREAKING: The tree chop has been stopped, provided councillors vote for a last-minute deal offered by the #Newark Library gardens landowner.
Words to come...

This is a 200+ year old veteran beech tree in Huddersfield. It is due for the chop. We must stop this mindless destruction.

It is difficult to express how I feel about this development. We joined the campaign when others thought the campaigners were 'over zealous loony lefties'. Chris has spent hours reading, understanding, writing. Trying to fight for a just cause, in the face of toxic politics.
Symbolic moment in the Sheffield tree-felling debacle - "The Streets Ahead clause requiring the felling of 17,500 street trees will be removed":

Will they have to give evidence whether they want to or not?
Will it be under oath/affirmation?
If not, what can it possibly achieve? How will they convince us of their veracity, given their track record?

Hard to know and that is why we need a proper inquiry and trust can be rebuilt, as at present its not only frustrating electorate, it is putting off funders and investors.

An inquiry shouldn't be soft and secret. That should be obvious. thestar.co.uk/news/people/sh…

I think most people woke up when Rustlings Road happened. No way anyone can justify dragging old ladies out of bed in the middle of the night. To chop down a healthy tree! Was like we were living in an Authoritarian State.

This is as close as I am allowed to Sheffield Full Council today.
I don't object to self-isolating as required.
But if we lose any votes by 1, that will be because the government has refused to allow hybrid or virtual meetings. This is unfair to the people who elected me. – at Sheffield, England

At this week's council meeting the new administration spells out it's priorities. At the bottom there is a pledge to hold a "local inquiry" into the tree felling saga. I don't know what a local inquiry is. I fully support the Opposition motion calling for a public inquiry.

Here's the May '16 cutting I took of the Chelsea Road elm tree. It was 4 inches tall then. 5 years later, its now around 96 inches tall. Younger elms find it harder to fight off DED than large mature elms. So there's every chance it will be killed in the next 5 years.... (1 of 2) – at Sheffield, England

Extraordinary story: Sheffield Council's former head of city regeneration accuses senior councillor responsible for city regeneration projects of 'openly associating with and supporting the interests of certain private commercial parties'. Probe ongoing.

So "axe man" Fox is the new Leader of Labour!! The very man who hide the truth and made sure local trees were chopped down. It's clear its going to be the same old..same old under this "new" Leader!
Coun Terry Fox has been selected as the new Labour Leader in Sheffield
Coun @julie_grocutt will be Deputy Leader
It follows a selection process with Labour councillors this morning

Look at the grin on that tree. Many of us tree huggers in Sheffield are feeling like that right now.

Back to the Future for @SheffLabour with thier new Leader. Cllr Terry Fox was the Cabinet member at the start of the Street Tree Felling Fiasco, It's clear Labour aren't changing and looks like more of the same that we have had for the past 10 years,

Yellow sunlight, fresh green leaves. Even a rare bit of blue sky. But not a hint of red. A significant day in Sheffield, influenced by these very lovely street trees. – at Sheffield, England
