Co-author @martinjones78 has a 10/10 thread explaining how #citizenscience can help with the 100s of GB of data routinely produced in #cryoEM and #teamtomo biological imaging:
The problem: many microscopes produce datasets in the giga- to terabyte regime. Extracting meaning from these datasets is HARD!
E.g. 3D #ElectronMicroscopy methods like #SBFSEM and #FIBSEM produce data at 100s of GB per day

Why do we need citizen science? Take #PlacentaProfiles for example: our #volunteers picked out 2.23M potential mitochondria in just 18 months – a number that would take a single researcher years to match. The #power of the #crowd indeed 💪
Aren’t computers up to the task? Sometimes – but people are much better at pattern recognition than computers, and biology is inherently variable, making these images particularly tricky. Combining #citizenscience with #artificialintellingence helps make computers better too.
📢HOT OFF THE PRESS📢
Our new paper, in collaboration with the @EtchACell team at @TheCrick, @DiamondLightSou and @RosFrankInst shares our collective experience in using @the_zooniverse for #citizenscience projects using biological #volumeEM data:

Published with @SpringerNature in Histochemistry and Cell Biology, authors @_OllyK @WinM_Tun @basham_mark @martinjones78 @EM_STP @MDarrow7 & @H_Spiers discuss using #crowdsourcing for the #segmentation of #microscopy image data, and combining #citsci with #machinelearning 🔬🧑💻
More good news - the first results update from #PlacentaProfiles! Read about how many #mitochondria our volunteers were able to find in Mito Mapper, and how we are looking to cluster the 2.2 million picks for our Mop Up workflow:
