There are strange things done in the midnight sun
Where the pikas and marmots scurry
Now smaller bugs are bigger players
Our plant-herbivore interactions have many more layers
And warming climate is an increasing worry.

"Extremely Loud Mating Songs at Close Range in White Bellbirds" J. Podos & M. Cohn-Haft
I, a bellbird, can sing two special songs,
Type 2 is loudest, I can't sing too long.
Sing LOUD! Mustn't hum,
Don't break her eardrum,
Pihas knew I'm the loudest all along!

Fly brave hummingbirds! Sing!
Focus on who to give your ring!
Depending on your lek, the song you will make,
will pull the ladies' heart strings!

Extremely Loud Mating Songs at Close Range in White Bellbirds
Sing white bellbirds! Use your voice!
Show the girls you're a good choice!
Give them the high amplitude, make the piha sound crude,
and then you will both rejoice!

Zebra finches...oh how so complex.
Corticosterone makes them stressed.
Fathers wonder what's wrong,
sons don't know what's going on,
so they learn their song from the best!

A helix’s handed spirality;
Two non-superposing
Mirrored molecules, chosen

Some think it appears to be play
It is in the lek
They go for the neck
It's the females for whom they display

There was a sound in the dark
It sounded like a dog's bark,
But looking around
No dog could be found
It was a spotted wood owl in the dark.

Singing louder than any other bird
The Bellbird wants to be favored
Females dare to come closer
But males only get braver
Singing louder, singing uncensored

This corticosterone stresses me out,
I just want to sing, girls, HEAR ME SHOUT!
We sound like my dad, my brother and I,
He cared for us long before we could fly.
He taught us what our song is all about

A poem about hummingbird visual and vocal signals:
Little hummingbirds, fly! Dance! Sing!
Fight off intruders, flap your wings!
Sing songs of your lek,
Sharp squeaks you will make,
Such glory and vict’ry you’ll bring!

Great variation is an aspen characteristic,
with genotypes growing both slowly and quick.
Growth-defense tradeoffs explain the divergence in traits,
which make aspen a model for science first-rate.
(Especially if you have only ten years to wait!)

There once was a fish who never could win
so he’d just stay still with hopes to blend in.
Some of his buds found a nice spot
where there were no large jaws in which to get caught.
Over there, the fish are not dinners;
they are happy and calm, worry-free swimmers.
