We're celebrating 19th century women artists today on the #OnlineArtExchange. We share 'In for Repairs' by
Laura Knight (1877–1970) painted 1942. She paved the way for female artists. In this painting, women are mending a barrage balloon to emphasise their efforts during WWI.

ALT A team of women are mending a barrage balloon as part of the war effort. The devices were used to defend against attack from low-flying aeroplanes. Its lustrous fabric contrasts with the women’s utilitarian overalls, emphasising their endeavours during wartime. In peace time, Knight favoured subjects like the circus, ballet and theatre. But, as an Official War Artist, she painted challenging scenes, including the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals.
