Imagine walking into a store, choosing the products you want, paying the agreed price and taking them home. Then you accuse the owner of taking your money, demand a say in how they run their company and insist they couldn’t exist without you. That is the logic behind treating trade as a handout. 🛒 I run a trade deficit with my grocery store. It buys nothing from me. But I get groceries. My receipt proves I purchased something, not that I was robbed or acquired the right to run the business. Countries are more complicated than grocery stores, but that basic distinction still matters. A trade deficit alone does not demonstrate exploitation. You have to examine the actual trading practices. Customers can negotiate, shop elsewhere or decide a purchase is no longer worthwhile.
