World Athletics Council voted in Budapest this week to award the 2029 World Championships to Nairobi and the 2031 edition to Munich, from a field of four bids that also included London and Rome. 🏟️ 🌍 This will be the first time the senior World Championships have been staged in Africa ‼️ 🗣️ World Athletics President Seb Coe: "With this Council decision today, we continue to fulfil our mission of growing athletics worldwide with the hosting of our World Athletics Championships in Asia, Africa and Europe over its next three editions. Nairobi and Munich ultimately presented two compelling propositions. They offer very different but equally exciting opportunities for our sport, and I am delighted that we can now begin working with both cities to stage two world-class championships.” 🇰🇪 Kenya 2029 Nairobi bid for 2025 and lost to Tokyo, with infrastructure identified as the weak point. However, the 48,000-seat capacity Kasarani Stadium is undergoing a complete structural renovation ahead of AFCON 2027, which Kenya will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda. Nairobi hosted the 2017 World U18s, which drew packed houses at Kasarani, and the 2021 World U20s. 68% of Kenyans surveyed by World Athletics in fan research rated their interest in track and field as high, against a 39% global average, which made them the most track and field-interested market they have measured. 🇩🇪 Munich 2031 Germany gets the World Championships back for the first time since Berlin 2009. Action will return to the Olympic Stadium that drew an estimated 267,000 track and field fans during the 2022 European Championships.
