My take on the Mecca Pact delegation’s visit to Tehran.
- The decision to send a Mecca Pact delegation to Tehran, led by Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman and joined by Pakistan’s Asim Munir and Turkey’s intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin, is an interesting development, not only in the context of the ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent another war, but also for what it tells us about the changing regional security dynamics.
- For Pakistan, the initiative appears to follow naturally from Munir’s recent visit to Tehran and offers Islamabad an opportunity to address a strategic dilemma that has become increasingly difficult to manage: how to reconcile its defence commitments to Saudi Arabia with its determination to maintain good relations with Iran, without finding itself caught in a confrontation between Tehran and a predominantly Sunni security grouping.
- If this reading is correct (and I believe it is), Pakistan is effectively demonstrating, by bringing the Mecca Pact into direct dialogue with the Iranian leadership, that its commitments to Riyadh do not necessarily have to come at the expense of its relations with Tehran.
- The Saudi dimension is perhaps even more interesting. Despite the Houthi attacks and the tensions generated by the regional crisis, Riyadh has continued to maintain diplomatic contacts with Tehran, apparently recognising that a further deterioration in relations would only add to its own security problems. The decision to send the Defence Minister to Tehran suggests something more than a routine diplomatic initiative. It points to a growing awareness in Riyadh that Saudi security cannot depend exclusively on American protection and military deterrence.
- The visit is also relevant to the debate that has surrounded the Mecca Pact since its creation, particularly over whether it was primarily intended as a security arrangement against Iran, Israel, or other regional actors. The fact that its representatives are now engaging directly with the Iranian leadership suggests that the agreement may be evolving in a rather different direction, or at least that its members do not want it to be perceived as an exclusively confrontational arrangement. Collective defence and diplomatic engagement with Iran are not necessarily contradictory, and this initiative seems intended to make precisely that point.
- There is also a connection with the R4 diplomatic framework. Although Egypt is absent from this initiative, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are once again acting together, reinforcing their role in the diplomatic process that produced the Islamabad Memorandum. Their involvement suggests that these countries are not simply interested in preventing another escalation, but may also be trying to retain a central role in shaping the regional security arrangements that may emerge from the current crisis.
- What I find particularly significant is the possible evolution in Saudi strategic thinking. Riyadh is certainly not abandoning its relationship with Washington, and there is little reason to believe that its longstanding mistrust of Iran has disappeared. But the Saudis seem to be increasingly questioning whether the traditional model of regional security, built largely around American military protection and the containment of Iran, is sufficient to safeguard their interests in the longer term. The Tehran visit could be an early indication of a broader adjustment, with Riyadh seeking to preserve its American security partnership while developing a more direct relationship with Iran.
- In my view, the significance of this initiative may extend well beyond the immediate efforts to prevent another round of fighting. It raises the possibility that the Mecca Pact, initially viewed by many through the familiar lens of regional rivalries, could eventually contribute to a security framework in which Iran is engaged rather than simply contained.

- convaincre les Ukrainiens de capituler ;

I express my solidarity with Spain in the current situation of illegal migration in Ceuta.
While third-country nationals in Ceuta do not enjoy free movement to mainland Spain or the rest of the Schengen area, Spain’s firm response, including ongoing accelerated returns, demonstrates our determination to protect our external borders, combat illegal migration, and dismantle criminal smuggling networks.
I welcome Spain’s close cooperation with Morocco in addressing this shared challenge and ensuring swift returns.
We will remain in close contact with the Spanish authorities in the coming days.

We have detected an intensive Russian propaganda campaign across Europe using pictures from Ceuta to sow destabilization.
There have been more than 1,500 publications on outlets identified by analysts as a pro-Russian network, led by Pravda and RT. Pravda Spanish has posted almost 300 of them. Every language edition of RT has pushed more than 25 news items on the issue.
For years, Moscow has used migration and other sensitive topics to stoke fear and destabilize European countries.
This is not about the situation itself, but about the way Russia tries to exploit any topic that can benefit its agenda. The only way to protect the public from this interference is to cut it off.
All Russian propaganda resources should be completely banned in every European country that takes its national security seriously.

I suppose if Sweden is under attack from Russian drones our reaction should be to close its airspace to rest of Europe and tweet that we expect Sweden to take necessary and concrete measures. Lesson learned

Whatever your political preferences, when an EU member state is targeted by a migration attack, the response should be simple: stand with the member state bearing the brunt of it, help it restore control, and defend Europe’s external borders.
We can sort out our differences among ourselves once the situation has been brought under control. But under external pressure, the only responsible course is to circle the wagons.

Unsurprising that Jonatan is one of the rare high level officials to bluntly describe what happened in Ceuta as a migration attack.
Too many European leaders dismally failed the test. They remain woefully unprepared for the geopolitical big leagues.

My public engagement is 2 decades old. And yet you have people to imply you must be hiding something. They try to find in your defense of your people’s freedom the proof you cannot be for peace and assert you must be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I am neither a wolf nor a sheep. Just a human being. I know how hard that is to accept for some.
They are the same people who would consider as good leaders those who called Palestinians human animals or said there are no innocents in Gaza or justified the massacres against them or participated in them or promoted colonization and occupation and oppression. They would see them as respectable and you as suspicious.
I am blunt and straightforward in my positions. The popular ones and the unpopular ones. I can trace back every way in which my thinking evolved and why. And most of it translates in my public positions.
I have been in favour of liberation through peaceful means for a long time. And there are personal reasons for that, a particular journey. Not only an official line. I just keep reminding those I speak to how important it is to prove us right, that freedom can be found through that peaceful path, so we can finally all live in peace and security.
Yes Palestinians are also entitled to peace and security since some seem to think those rights belongs only to one group at the expense of the other, at the expense of their rights and their lives and their very existence. They would demand Palestinian pacifism and justify Israeli militarism. I believe in coherence and consistency. I believe in shared peace. Not coexistence with the occupation. What a radical thought, right?!
As for the threats, the empty accusations, the attempts at intimidation, given what the Palestinian people are enduring, do they really matter? Enough to justify a post. But not much more than that.
