The government has completed its (very elongated) U-turn on Healthwatch.
Instead of being scrapped local branches will be "retained and the system strengthened"
Excellent news! Though some real thought needs to be given to rebuilding capacity in HWE and local healthwatch after a year of uncertainty…

Excellent news! Reform to carers allowance is long overdue and hugely welcome.
A system that can leave someone thousands of pounds worse off for taking an extra shift or getting a small pay rise makes no sense.
Tuesday’s @guardian front page: ‘Cliff edge’ rule to be scrapped in wake of carer’s allowance scandal theguardian.com/society/2026…
It traps carers in poverty, pushes people out of paid work and leaves them facing unpayable debts. All while performing one of societies most undervalued functions: caring for someone they love.

Simple. Politicians are one-club golfers who rarely understand what operational factors matter for health system performance. So they pull the one lever they think they understand: reorganisation (which doesn't work).

Mayors already cover most of the North, and soon they'll cover the whole country.
Our NEW report calls for mayors to have control over a 5% share of income tax, DOUBLING their annual funding.
That's more they can choose to spend on transport, housing, and high streets 👇👇

It looks like the government will have to (quietly) drop its flagship NHS promise (to cut NHS hospital waiting lists) writes @Jamesillman ahead of the Labour Party conference hsj.co.uk/expert-briefings/r…

3 things to note on all the current tax debates:
1. Raising the income tax Personal Allowance does *not* benefit those on the lowest incomes most. It's people in the richest half of the country who mostly benefit.
(Although mainly middle earners rather than the very rich.)

Choices, choices…
Recommit to 18 weeks? Quietly shelve? Deliberately break from target to refocus on something else (primary care access, A&E)?

Following a month of failing to convince X moderators that I’m a lowly health policy commentator, not an adult entertainment producer, I’ve bitten the bullet and started a new account.
Follow for (occasionally funny?) musings about all things NHS, care and public health!
Right call, though I fear untold damage has already been done to independent patient voice given the uncertainty of the last year.
A lot of work to do to get us back to where we were…
