Islamist symbolism ceasing to be a component of Syria’s identity and becoming the filter through which all other components are judged isn't the way to "strengthen national identity" - my argument in the case of school names for @SelimKoru's Kültürkapf substack.com/home/post/p-213…
Syria’s Education Ministry has altered textbook images, adding veils and niqabs on women, erasing girls from some sections and removing photos of men dancing. The changes have sparked consternation and concern among Syrians who, after 15 years of war and decades of dictatorship, want and deserve an inclusive future and not one where half the population is slowly erased in schools and universities.

Bu adamlar bir ömür boyu, alimlerin siyasetçiye mesafeli durması gerektiğini anlattılar, sultanın sofrasına oturan alimden uzak durmalı dediler.Sonra kendilerine biraz ilgi gösteren ilk siyasetçinin eline ayağına kapaniyorlar. Yazık, boşa geçmiş bir hayat. nefes.com.tr/bir-kare-topkap…

There was a time when people debated whether Erdoğan was a democratic leader. Nobody does anymore — not even his supporters.
That doesn't mean he's illegitimate, but the form of his legitimacy has changed.

It also means that he's no longer populist. Indeed, Erdoğan has been attacking his opponents as populists.

historians train to move antique globes around offices?
Replying to @DanLamothe
Discussion of this has been circulating the Pentagon for some time. Some were mortified. Others made jokes.
One source suggested that an "lack of patience" appeared at play when it comes to why Hegseth’s team didn't just wait for historians trained to make the move.

Well, the real takeaway from this clip is that Hitchens points out that Israel never defined exactly where it has a right to exist, and now no major Israeli party says that's limited to 67 borders. The right to exist comes to mean "right to expand" in exactly the way he says.
I touch on some of these themes here kulturkampftr.substack.com/p…

Few news teams have covered a story as relentlessly and as thoroughly as Bloomberg’s Turkey crew, headed by @uguruzyilmaz, who helped blow the lid off Turkey’s investment fund scandal.
Months of top-notch reporting, capped by this must-read.

weird generalization
And this is exactly what all those European “Turkey watchers” fail to understand: Turkey’s opposition is just as opposed to the EU’s policy towards Ankara as the ruling AKP is.
Look at what Turkey’s opposition leader, @eczozgurozel, has to say about von der Leyen’s criticism of the Turkish–Libyan maritime agreement:
“We will continue to defend our country’s rights and interests on every platform, and we will continue to stand against your arrogant stance—a stance that has clearly lost all impartiality.”
Brussels can support Turkey’s opposition as much as it likes (and there’s nothing wrong with that), but the opposition will never share Brussels’ worldview.
A blue wave would be bad news for Ankara
