The scout’s report begins normally.
Wind from the east. Poor visibility. Smoke beyond the ridge. No enemy movement.
Then, halfway down the page, his handwriting changes.
The letters grow smaller. Closer together. As though he feared using too much space.
The report was dismissed.
War does strange things to tired men.
Smoke becomes soldiers.
Branches become hands.
Fear gives faces to things that have none.
Perhaps that is all this was.
A frightened scout looking too long into the fire.
The first report was easy to dismiss.
A soldier, dead for several days. His body had not begun to rot.
The officer blamed the cold.
The next morning, another body. Same condition. Then another.
By the end of the week, no one mentioned the weather anymore.
One strange report is a rumour.
Two are coincidence.
Three invite investigation.
By the fifth, someone should have stopped calling them unrelated.
Instead, the reports were filed.
The armies marched.
The kings argued over Mugna Vale.
While Altea and Fandor prepared to bleed for Mugna Vale, the rest of Legrand watched.
Some with interest. Some with contempt.
And some with the uneasy patience of people who had seen kingdoms make the same mistakes before.
There were five powers in Legrand.
A traveller once asked Geddo what Finias was guarding.
The old man looked toward the cold horizon for a long time.
Then he answered:
“Silence.”
The traveller laughed.
Geddo did not.
