If only we’d built nuclear plants instead of Snowy Hydro 2. Even in the worst case scenario where Bowen compares it to Hinkley C Nuclear Plant that will be an about a 3x cost increase, a lot better than a 12x blowout for a battery. Hinkley C will produce 7% of the UK’s electricity from just 2 reactors for over 60 years. At more realistic CSIRO prices you could have built 5 large nuclear reactors for the up to $50bn price tag of Snowy Hydro 2 (including transmission lines). It’s worth reminding ourselves that the one reactor Australia did build recently, the OPAL research reactor, was basically on time and on budget.

Qld Premier @DavidCrisafulli is on a unity ticket with @AlboMP by refusing to lift the ideological state bans on nuclear power and uranium. One of the images might be AI, but is this seriously the side of the debate Crissafulli wants to be on?

There's this myth that Australians don't support nuclear power. ㅤ New polling shows that nearly 2/3 believe we should consider it, including 48% of Labor voters. ㅤ Our ideological nuclear bans must go.

If you want a video summary of Australia’s nuclear debate, this is a pretty good option. Credit to @build_aus for this well researched piece that exposes the contradictions in Australia’s nuclear policies. Video out now on YouTube: youtu.be/bIqiyY7x4vk?si=HTvq…

If climate groups like Rising Tide actually cared, they'd support nuclear power. As this comment reveals, they'd rather reduce consumption than have abundant clean energy. Australia's ideological nuclear bans must be lifted.

Tomorrow one of the world’s leading nuclear experts, MIT Professor Jacopo Buongiorno will be in Parliament to educate politicians about nuclear ⚛️. He’ll be speaking to politicians across the aisle at a time where power demand is growing and technology is rapidly advancing.

This new report says we shouldn't do nuclear because there is "no renewable constraint" in Australia. Why then is our 2030 renewable target so off track? Why ignore the genuine economic and social license issues delaying projects? The report also falsely claims we have "no domestic nuclear delivery capability". What about the supply chain and workforce we're setting up for the AUKUS nuclear subs? Anti nuclear activists continue to deny reality to defend Australia's ideological bans on nuclear power.

The real reason we don't use nuclear in Australia is politics. Despite having the most uranium in the world, we have some of the most anti nuclear laws in the world. Here's my full editorial where I make the case for nuclear in Australia:

Why is @DavidCrisafulli refusing uranium mining royalties to help fix his budget problems? It makes no sense. Economic, regional and climate benefits, yet ideology continues to get in the way!

Where are the climate groups calling for the QLD LNP to drop their ideological opposition to nuclear power and uranium mining? This is what happens when clean energy options like nuclear are limited. David Crisafulli can't says he's waiting for bipartisanship and back coal over nuclear.

The South Australian Labor Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis says "it is a testament to the idiocy of politics" that the nuclear industry is banned in other states. This is a wake up call for NSW/WA Labor and the QLD LNP who defend ideological bans on uranium mining. We have the most uranium in the world, why keep it in the ground and why aren't we using it at home to create clean energy?

Do they not get that the richter scale is logarithmic? Nuclear plants are designed to withstand earthquakes thousands of times more severe than the 4.8 magnitude earthquake on Saturday in Melbourne. Even the Fukushima reactors from the 1970s withstood the 9.0 earthquake, it was the tsunami breaching the low seawall that caused that accident. Australia is one of the most stable continents on earth, scaremongering like this is a pathetic distraction.

Australia is one of the only advanced economies without a national strategy for nuclear fusion. That's despite there being many homegrown startups including HB11, Ciral Fusion, Axis Fusion and UNSW's Atomcraft Project. Australia has been a world-leader in fusion innovation operating the first tokamaks in the world outside of the Soviet Union back in the 60s. Unlike fission, fusion isn't technically illegal down under, but the same anti nuclear politics means that successive governments have ignored the opportunity and created investment uncertainty. Whilst fusion has some technical hurdles to solve, it must be part of our long-term energy outlook alongside nuclear fission for our immediate energy needs.

It was fantastic to learn more about fusion at the FusionXAustralia conference in Sydney. We must start the conversation now.

Huge news! Green party of England & Wales are officially pro-nuclear. Party members voted over the weekend to support low-carbon nuclear alongside other forms of low-carbon energy such as wind & solar. We're calling on the Aus @Greens & @DavidShoebridge to follow their lead.
