As the #DRC catches global attention due to #M23, its other crises continue to be overlooked, including attacks on the #Banyamulenge. My blog series from June unpacks narratives on this complex crisis that overlook/downplay the Banyamulenge perspective.

Perhaps the UAE's candidate for UN Secretary-General Lana Nusseibeh "could begin by explaining why her own government has been repeatedly implicated in helping fuel the genocidal catastrophe in Sudan."

There is something very concrete you can do at this juncture for #Sudan, @Ed_Miliband.
Veto the candidacy for UNSG of the individual who has done as much as anyone to protect the perpetrators of El Fasher: Lana Nussibeih.

Here is a great reminder of all the things that have NOT happened since El Fasher fell to the RSF: No new sanctions on Hemedti, not sanctions against UAE, no enforcement of existing arms embargo. hrw.org/news/2026/10/26/suda…

Miliband: ‘the UK is sanctioning those linked to these and other atrocities’ in Sudan.
Also Miliband: we are considering supporting an apologist for the UAE, which sponsors the perpetrators, to lead the United Nations.

Candidates for UN Secretary-General should be assessed on their qualifications, record, and commitment to international law—not gender alone given the importance of the role and its responsibility to uphold UN principles.

EXCLUSIVE: The UK is leaning towards backing Emirati diplomat Lana Nusseibeh as secretary-general of the United Nations, we can reveal.
Nusseibeh's candidacy has drawn controversy because of the UAE's support for the RSF in Sudan.

One way to "strengthen support for atrocity survivors" in Sudan would be to block the main government backer of the El Fasher slaughter from installing the next UN Secretary General.
Will the UK exercise its P5 power to do so?

Sudan: One Year on from the Cataclysm of El Fasher. “It is as if a tsunami had hit the city,” said a resident who returned to Sudan’s El Fasher only to find it destroyed and largely abandoned after the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) October 2025 takeover.

I know up is down these days but serenading the UN for a position when you undermined the same institution and rejected the UN Panel of Experts’ findings on UAE links to the RSF to run cover for your government’s calamitous role in Sudan’s war is an outrage and an insult.
I've spent much of my life in and around the @UN. What stays with me most is its people: colleagues who, in the world's hardest places, deliver food and medicine, protect civilians and help parties take the first steps towards peace.
The UN was never meant to agree with the world. It was built to help the world agree. This UN Day, I remain confident in what the United Nations can achieve - and in the future we can build when it acts early, supports its personnel, and measures success by what changes on the ground. #UNDay

The US and Russia seem to be pushing for the next UN Secretary General to be a UAE official, @Lana_Nusseibeh, who has helped underwrite mass murder and mass rape in Sudan and then lied about it, as she is doing here.

A year after the RSF captured El Fasher in Norther Darfur 🇸🇩, civilians are still living through a nightmare.
Survivors describe torture, unlawful killings, arbitrary detention, forced labor and severe hunger. Children are malnourished. Civilians are monitored, terrorized and deprived of safety. Yet the international community continues to fail them.
Without a ceasefire, accountability and meaningful civilian protection, these atrocities will continue.
States must act now:
- Secure an immediate ceasefire
- Deploy an international civilian protection force
- Halt arms transfers to all parties to the conflict
- Ensure those responsible for crimes under international law are held to account

Civilians in El Fasher in North Darfur, Sudan, are still suffering detention, torture and limited access to humanitarian aid one year after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured the city and committed brutalities against civilians.
A pervasive pall of fear hangs over El Fasher today. Men and women live under constant RSF surveillance, and with the ongoing threat of detention, torture and killing.
There has been little accountability for abuses in North Darfur. The moves towards a ceasefire have been half-hearted, and Amnesty International is not aware of any diplomatic attempts to establish an international force that would meaningfully protect civilians.
Crucially, the United Arab Emirates has continued to support the RSF, while governments with the required influence have largely failed to name and denounce their role or hold them to account.
