My horror author crossover head canon is that cenobites’ origin is being Herbert West’s experiments. They both come through the wall to get you. Look like medical experiments and it’s already canon that they’re not random cosmic masochists/sadists because Pinhead was once human.

If spirits truly relive their final moments over and over, and Herbert West fucked them over into a persistent neither alive or dead state with his experimental tampering then suffering would be their new origin. It wouldn’t be weird if that became some twisted religion for them.
