WOW, this is the earliest known group of chess pieces in the world! 🤩
Dated AD 700s, they were excavated at Afrasiab in Samarkand (present day Uzbekistan). Made up of two foot soldiers, two mounted riders, an elephant with rider, a figure driving two horses and another driving a three-horse chariot.
The chess pieces and the elephant ivory used to make them, probably came to Central Asia from India, where it’s believed the game of chess originated in the AD 500s, before spreading to the Islamic world and westwards to Europe.
See them at the British Museum #SilkRoads exhibition on loan from Samarkand State Museum-Reserve.
