Went through some data and film in the opener. In this one we look at Philly's cross-match tactic that played out through many kinds of possessions (Post Up, P&R etc). Game one delivered takeaways as valuable as any you’ll find in this season Link: shaxnba.substack.com/p/long-…

I asked Quin Snyder about some of the tradeoffs that come with Dyson covering checking off-ball players (KD tonight) he discussed how they have multiple options at POA and how HOU can operate with multiple handlers to circumvent certain matchups (keeping Durant as a spacer)
it’s matchups like this where not having a true wing-sized defender puts the Hawks (especially the starting lineup) in a tough position Dyson having to face guard a movement shooter suppresses his defensive playmaking, prevents him from roaming & cleaning up any lapses, etc.

Darko on the Raptors defence forcing 50 turnovers against teams the last 2 games: “Anything I would tell you right now, I would be lying to you. I think you’re a very decent man. I don’t want to lie to you.” 😭😭😭

Defending in liminal space. Peel switching from half-court. Botching guard-to-guard screen coverages. Passing when a defender loses a shoe, & not enough going "right." On why IND needs everybody playing like Jalen Slawson - but especially Oubre & Walker: patreon.com/basketballshewro…

An important part of evaluation/film study is noticing when there's an actual flaw vs good defense Could KAT have held onto this? Could OG have gotten deeper in the corner? I still have those questions in the 2nd poss, but the 2nd poss. is A LOT more successful than the 1st

I get why NY did this, especially to begin the game Their P&R defense is predicated on the back end. Both Bridges/OG on elite shooters (George/White) was important Now in crunch time they could've thrown a bigger guy on, I will say that. Bc it unlocked Tatum's ISO/Post game
Folks had 3 days to gameplan and said Hart on Tatum for 48 minutes

At the half possession quality on shots where Hart isn't shooting: 1.13 PPP, 1.03 ePPP good stuff so far However, starting lineup with x5 on Hart in last two games (I'm at the half in BOS): 17 possessions 0.27 PPP😬
In a defensive tactic where we usually see Towns' usage go down. The first three possessions Towns scores three times mainly due to his own aggression 1: BOS late scram in the post 2: BOS clogs action, George gets high, cut 3: P&R - big in action/switch double, cut out rot

Hart with the 5 on is almost always a safety outlet, no one is pressuring him. Brunson doesn't get great separation off the screen and yes he does get half a step on Walsh. Would still like a pass back to Hart to get even better separation/put Queta in a coverage at least
Defender draped on Brunson, Hart is standing right there to hand it off to and get it back if he wants

The NBA is awful man. You don't see other major leagues do this. Like market your game properly Everything is so gate kept
Clips for last nights games are (mostly) not working, beyond the scope of what I can fix. Cross your fingers this is a temporary outtage not a permenant change. If not, NBA please hire someone to remake the functionality in league pass, it is low hanging fruit and very doable.

Look at Drummond's eyes before the play😂
Out of their Stack Middle Alignment they have the bottom guy screen for the big. Usually it's a small so teams don't switch it They run this, but a lot of times teams jam it up or they're unable to get it to the big. However, they've been able to do it 3 times this postseason

Brown said there was a stretch where his team was "bitching" to the refs instead of playing through the physicality.

When the ball pressure is weak the screener can get out quicker (advantage already there) which makes the roll more impactful. Robinson is instantly behind KAT. Hart has no choice but to tag. Tatum has an easy live dribble strong hand pass.
As the broadcast noted, the Robinson roll creates the Hart tag and the open three. You can mitigate that action with great ball pressure at the point of attack. Bridges is too soft in coverage and Tatum has the comfort to come off and make that read

Gotta just tip your cap to Tatum there, just tough shotmaking to close the game out. Knicks still aren't as playing as crisp as they are capable of. Turnovers and rebounding hurt them. Bridges just has to be better

That was playoff intensity and a good one for sure You go to look at the boxscore for oREBs, TOVs, POTs/SCPs, 3PA and these teams are neck and neck. NY cleaned up their offense well in the 2nd half TO wise too
That was an amazingly high quality game between the Celtics and Knicks. I would love to see someone go through the various strategies and counters because those two teams are so damn good. No business playing that type of quality+intensity basketball in game 2 of the season.

Nothing else you can really do at the end here I thought they defended well, definitely some minor POA stuff from Hart on those shots, but you live with it The one out of P&R you just tip your cap to
