Nobody talks about the part where you have to keep believing in yourself while nothing is working yet.

Underrated life advice: get better at recovering fast. You're going to fail. You're going to get rejected. Make bad calls. Lose money. Embarrass yourself. Whatever it is, the goal is shrinking the gap between falling down and getting back up. Master the art of starting over.

Watch how people treat someone they can't benefit from and you will learn a lot about who they actually are.
Not who they are in the meeting when the right people are watching. Not who they are at the dinner when impressions matter.
Who they are when there is nothing to gain, no audience to perform for and no obvious consequence for treating someone poorly.
Those moments can tell you a lot about a person's character, and people reveal themselves constantly in the small interactions they never think twice about.
The way they speak to the receptionist. The way they respond to the junior member of the team. The way they treat the person who just joined versus the person who can open doors for them.
Watch carefully.
Character often shows up most clearly when there is nothing to perform for.

For any manager or boss to get the best out of the people they lead, they have to be willing to understand them as individuals and not just manage them as a collective.
What motivates one person may drain another. What challenges one person may overwhelm someone else. What makes one person feel valued may mean very little to the next.
The leaders who consistently get strong performance from their teams are not only the ones with good systems and rigorous processes. They are also the ones who take the time to understand each person well enough to lead them in a way that actually works for who they are.
That level of individual attention is not a luxury of good leadership. It is an important part of it.
Because when you lead people without taking the time to understand them, you can end up managing activity and hoping the results follow.
