DYK: All 50 states have a form of the move over law? This year we are partnering with Wayne County local police agencies, the Wayne County Sheriff and the National Sheriff’s Association to educate drivers on the Move Over Law. We continue to see our patrol cars struck by drivers weekly and in 2024 we lost Trooper Joel Popp and Motor Carrier Officer Daniel Kerstetter when they were struck by a passing driver. In MIchigan, our move over law states that drivers must move over one lane AND slow down 10 MPH below the posted speed limit when they see a emergency vehicle (Police, Fire, EMS, Tow Truck, Construction Vehicle or Roadway Assistance Vehicle) with flashing lights on. When in doubt, move over. If it is unsafe to move over, drivers must slow at least 10 MPH below the speed limit and proceed with all due care and caution past the vehicle. The video with this post shows the dangers of when drivers do not move over. And while it is not the law, please move over for fellow drivers that are on the side of the road. #MoveOverDriveSafe
