From Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a): ‘(Syeda) Fatima (a) passed away during Jumadi Al-Aakhira on the day of Tuesday for three vacant from it, of the year eleven from the Emigration, and the cause of her expiry was that Qunfuz, a slave of Umar, had thrusted her repeatedly with the hilt of the sword by his orders. So Muhassin (a) was martyred, and she fell ill from that with a severe illness and did not let anyone from the ones who had hurt her enter to see her, and they were two men (Abu Bakr and Umar) from the companions of the Prophet (s). They asked Amir Al-Momineen (a) to intercede for them to see her. Amir Al-Momineen (a) asked her. When they entered to see her, they said to her, ‘How are you, O daughter of Rasool-Allah?’ She said, ‘With goodness, by the Praise of Allah.’ Then she said to them, ‘Did you two not hear from the Prophet (s) saying: Fatima is a part of me, so the one who hurts her has hurt me, and the one who hurts me has hurt Allah?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ She said: ‘By Allah! You two have hurt me!’ He (Imam al-Sadiq (a)) said: ‘They went out from her presence, and she was angry upon them.’ Muhammad Bin Hammam said: ‘And it is reported that she passed away on ten vacant from Jumadi Al-Aakhira, and her complete age on the day she passed away was eighteen years, and eighty-five days after the expiry of her father. Amir Al-Momineen (a) washed her, and no one was present apart from him (a), and Al-Hassan (a), and Al-Husayn (a), and (Syeda) Zainab (a), and (Syeda) Umm Kulthum (a), and Fizza her maid, and Asma Bint Umays. And he brought her out to Al-Baqi (cemetery) during the night, and with him were Al-Hassan (a) and Al-Husayn (a), and he prayed Salat upon her, and did not let anyone know of it, nor was anyone present at her expiry, nor did anyone from the rest of the people pray Salat upon her apart from them. He buried her in an open field and effaced the place of her grave; and on the night she was buried, Al-Baqi became having forty new graves in it. And when the Muslims came to know of her expiry, they came to Al-Baqi and found forty new graves in it, so her grave was ambiguous among the rest. The people clamoured and blamed each other, saying, ‘Your Prophet did not leave behind among you all except for one daughter. She died and was buried, and you did not attend her expiry or the Salat upon her, and you do not even know her grave.’ The ruling authority from them (Abu Bakr) said, ‘Bring from the Muslim women one who can exhume these graves until we find her, so we can pray Salat upon her and visit her grave!’ That reached Amir Al-Momineen (a), so he came out angrily, his eyes reddened, and his cheeks flowing with tears. Upon him was the yellow cloak which he used to wear during every abhorrence, and he was leaning upon his sword Zulfiqar, until he arrived at Al-Baqi. The warners came to the people and said, ‘This Ali Bin Abi Talib (a) is coming as you can see. He is swearing by Allah: if you were to turn over even a stone from these graves, he would place the sword upon every last one of you.’ Umar and his companions met him and said to him, ‘What is the matter with you, O Abu Al-Hassan! By Allah! We shall exhume her grave and pray upon her!’ Ali (a) struck his hand to the total of his clothes, then struck him to the ground and said to him, ‘O son of darkness! As for my right, I have left it fearing that the people would retract from their religion; and as for the grave of (Syeda) Fatima (a), by the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Ali! If you and your companions were to dig anything from that, I shall quench the ground with your blood! If you like, then turn away, O Umar!’ Abu Bakr met him and said, ‘O Abu Al-Hassan! By the right of Rasool-Allah, and by the Right of the One above the Throne! Please leave him, for we will not do anything you dislike.’ He (Imam (a)) said: ‘So he (Ali (a)) let him go, and the people dispersed, and they did not repeat that.’’ — Bihar Al Anwaar – V 43, Ch 7 H 11
