I had been using X in Japanese, but I created this account specifically to post about AR-related topics. Since there isn’t much interest in AR in Japan, I’d like to connect with engineers overseas.

What if the next wave of XR creators never open Unity? A Show HN project lets you build a world on your phone and explore it in Vision Pro or Quest. The tools are getting simple enough that ideas matter more than pipelines.

Someone built a world on their phone, then walked through it in Vision Pro and Quest. Same content, different devices, no heavy pipeline. I think this is where WebXR gets interesting: creation is moving to the device everyone already owns.

After 30 years in the web industry, I've noticed the tipping point is rarely a tech milestone. It's when non-tech people start talking about the product at dinner. Smart glasses in Japan are starting to get those conversations.

Celebrities in Japan are buying Ray-Ban Meta and people are noticing. Mainstream adoption rarely starts with specs. It starts when someone you recognize wears the thing in daily life. I think smart glasses are getting close to that moment here.

If your AR UI relies on dark backgrounds, it'll look washed out on optical glasses. Samsung is working on this at the hardware level. Until that ships, I'd test every interface against a bright real-world scene first.

Optical see-through glasses can't display black. It's the quiet limit of AR visuals. Samsung's patent dims the area around CG outlines electronically so the image doesn't look blurry. Small trick, big readability win. Display UX may matter more than raw specs.

The best AR use cases are where both hands and both eyes are already busy. Emergency medicine fits that perfectly. What other jobs have that same constraint?
7
Hands free, eyes up. In Japan, TXP Medical demoed Rescue-AR on XREAL glasses for emergency care. Responders can log and share patient info without looking away from the patient. This is the kind of AR use case I find convincing. The problem was real before the tech arrived.

What if "VR is slowing down" isn't the real story? Reality Labs revenue is down 6%, but the energy in my feed is all about glasses. I think the category is shifting, not disappearing. The question is who's ready when it does.

Meta's Reality Labs revenue fell 6% YoY to about $440M last quarter. Headsets are cooling while glasses get the attention. Are you still designing for headsets first, or already thinking glasses-first?

3 things VR modders keep proving: 1. Players want their favorite non-VR games in VR. 2. Full campaign support beats tech demos. 3. Communities fill content gaps fast. Gears of War: E-Day's mod is the latest example. #VR

A PC VR mod for Gears of War: E-Day is coming with full campaign support. Modders keep doing what studios hesitate to do, and I think VR content supply is increasingly community-driven.

What if the killer app for AR glasses isn't an app at all, but a celebrity-led experience? Snap is betting on Robert Downey Jr. for SPECS. I'm not sure it works, but I'd watch it closely. #XR

Snap is working with Robert Downey Jr. on SPECS experiences. AR glasses need a reason to put them on, and a good story may sell that better than a spec sheet ever will.

In VR fitness, retention matters more than wow factor. Supernatural going independent means it has to earn its users on its own merits. I'll be watching how that shapes the content roadmap on Quest.

Supernatural is back on Quest as early access after spinning out of Meta. Can a VR fitness app thrive without a giant's budget behind it? I'm genuinely curious. #VR

What if the bottleneck in XR development stops being code and becomes taste? Claude Code just built an AR "save this moment" app for Pico, start to finish. The ideas are now the hard part. #AR
14
A dev handed an AR app idea to Claude Code. It set up the environment, built the app, and installed it on a Pico headset. I think we're closer to "describe it, wear it" than most XR teams realize.

When a new headset lands, devs rarely start with a productivity app. They port a 1996 game. I think that's the real platform stress test: do people want to play with it? Mario 64 on Vision Pro hit high on HN for a reason.

Someone got Super Mario 64 running on Apple Vision Pro. Nobody asked for it. That's exactly why I love it.
