Op mโn laatste avond in Verdun wilde ik heel graag โla lanterne des mortsโ zien. Een zoeklicht bovenop het ossuarium, symbolisch zoekend naar de vermiste poiluโs in de velden rond Verdun.
Eenmaal aangekomen was het aardedonker. Geen zoeklicht. Toch was het donker ook ontroerend.

This is Blackie and Seaman James "Lofty" Martin of the research ship Discovery. When a violent roll of the ship caused Blackie to slide into the icy Antarctic waters during a 1929-1931 expedition, Martin immediately leapt into the sea to rescue her. Martin could not reach Blackie, so another crewman was dangled over the water on a bowline until he was able to snatch the cat. The soggy moggy spent several hours in the warm engine room drying out. Blackie was not affected by the incident and later had several kittens.
