A British father of two got two years this week for a plastic bottle and a mouthful of swearing at police in Portsmouth. The judge called him a thug. Said the sentence was to put other people off turning up. I am a father. I know what two years looks like to children. School runs. Birthdays. Being in the house. The court accepted he was not a dangerous offender. An empty bottle. That is what two years bought. If the state wants deterrence, it has found the easy target. Men like him are easy to jail. The boats are not. The hotels are not. The people who keep sending the same press lines are not. Wrong to throw things at police. Also wrong to pretend this sentence is about public safety. It is about who they are allowed to make an example of.

Moments ago MPs voted against Lauren Edwards MP’s assisted dying bill, by 286 to 270. This is a devastating setback for dying people - but make no mistake, this issue is not going away. Law change on assisted dying remains a matter of when - not if. The British public demands that Parliament listen, and terminally ill people and families will not rest until they do.

NHS care is now being rationed. GPs have been told (and will be paid) to refuse, at least, 1 out of 4 specialist referrals to hospitals in order to reduce waiting lists by 25% minimum. Wes Streeting is a dangerous menace. This is an inhumane way to reduce waiting lists.
