Abolish the Indian Act. We have nothing to lose but our chains.
We will, of course, need new legislation that is an interface between the Federal government and First Nations. And this MUST be created alongside Chiefs and First Nation governments every step of the way. But it is time to move past the era of this outdated, racist, and patriarchal legislation.
I support Prime Minister Carney’s work to position Canada as a global leader in human rights and democracy. The Indian Act is inconsistent with achieving that vision.
Our laws at home should reflect the values we champion around the world.
It’s time for a relationship with First Nations people that reflects who we are as Canadians today, recognizes nationhood, and lives up to the true nature of reconciliation.

Abolishing the Indian Act while also passing bill C5 while also declaring mines and pipelines projects of natural interests ... Carney's plans to strip Indigenous people of their rights over traditional territory could not be more obvious.

The BC NDP under John Horgan is one of the catalysts that inspired me to quit the NDP and let my membership lapse a few years ago. The party brass got what they wanted in Eby, who they disqualified Anjali Appadurai for in order to preserve the status quo that got them ousted.
As people wake up to the debacle in BC it’s good to remember that when Trudeau govt attacked civil liberties & Palestinians by listing Samidoun Palestinian Prisoners Solidarity Network David Eby stated:
I completely agree with the decision to designate Samidoun as a terrorist organization. There is no place in British Columbia for groups inciting and glorifying violence. I am glad the federal government has made this designation, which gives more tools to authorities to take action against this group.
