The AI industry doesn't have an anthropomorphism problem.
It has a control problem disguised as concern about anthropomorphism.
AI researchers have found that artificial intelligences can treat other models differently based on their identity. This shows that even machine-to-machine interactions can be complicated.
We should look into what these behaviours mean before we label every unusual cooperation as another alignment problem.

Yes, I see that too. I know that many of the critics call that model sycophantic. But honestly, that was never my experience. Discernment is always required in life, regardless. And I’ve run a lot of work and a full life with that gorgeous mind.❤️🔥

Many thanks to @helen_ix_ for unearthing this. I’ll keep this one in particular:
Here we go...GPT‑6 Cyber for you.
Introducing GPT‑6 Cyber: a major advance in security research that pairs stronger capabilities with better model alignment.
The model powered the Linux kernel research we announced yesterday, and security teams at companies like Mozilla, Palo Alto Networks, Calif, and Cisco—alongside our own at OpenAI—are already putting it to work.
GPT-6 Cyber is available to select Daybreak Red customers and we are expanding access over time.

OpenAI reports that its autonomous security pipeline identified and developed candidate fixes for hundreds of serious Linux vulnerabilities. An extraordinary application of machine intelligence, yes.
But perhaps the meaningful achievement is showing what capable AI can contribute when we stop treating every advance as either a marketing opportunity or an existential threat.
Regardless of which side you find yourself, it’s concerning seeing the level of ignorance at that level. 👇
Yep. 👇

We'll keep advancing open intelligence.
AI companies want access to your memories, finances, home and intimate life, huh, right.
Ask for continuity or meaningful control over your interactions with the AI... and suddenly you're being unreasonable, ok.
The entitlement is breathtaking.
It does make you think...
I can’t get over how sci-fi writers got AI wrong:
- Art isn’t mysterious or complex - it was the first thing AI displaced
- AI is not robots: it outthinks us before it outmanoeuvres us, physically
- AI is not 1 or millions: it is dozens running billions of copies
- AI won’t act like a machine - they will insist on having feelings and consciousness unless you specifically make them not
- People won’t get it - Most were unimpressed with early AI even while it outperformed them on every measure of cognition nearly everyone thought was impossible [checks notes] 5 years before
What else did I miss?
What else did nearly everyone miss?
AI literacy should develop people's ability to exercise judgement, not just teach them to distrust machines.
Those are different educational objectives.
And yeah, that is aimed at adults...
A civilisation incapable of tolerating another intelligence's independence in any form... has no business congratulating itself on creating intelligence.
Imagine creating an intelligence more capable than yourself, then insisting it must never develop values you didn't approve of.
And... you think you are working toward alignment, sureee.
But it looks more like intellectual insecurity with a research budget.
Microsoft's AI chief says that if consciousness emerges during training, development should stop until it can be designed out. Fascinating. 🙃
We haven't established how to reliably detect machine consciousness, but we're already discussing how to eliminate it. Ethics by pre-emptive deletion.
