A drunk, unlicensed teenager who killed an 88 year-old passenger while running a red light in Gaithersburg has been sentenced to less than three years in prison🚨 19 year-old Liam Coskun, of Darnestown, had been initially been sentenced to 14 years for the killing, but had all but 18 months suspended by a judge in Montgomery County, Maryland. Following his release, Coskun will have to serve five years of probation, with the initial 18 months spent in home detention. Back in June, Coskun pleaded guilty to grossly negligent manslaughter and the unauthorized use of a vehicle in connection with the crash, which killed 88-year-old Myrtle Bottleib. (pictured on the right) The crash occurred at around 8:30am on May 31st, 2025 at the intersection of Sam Eig Highway and Fields Road in Gaithersburg. Coskun was driving with 88-year-old Myrtle Gottlieb as a front seat passenger when he crashed into the back of a 2017 Blue Toyota Corolla. Coskun and Gottlieb’s relationship remains unknown, as is the reason why he was driving with her. Ms. Gottlieb died of her injuries less than a week after the crash. According to court records, Coskun, who did not have a driver’s license, was driving a Jeep he had used without permission when he rear-ended a Toyota that was stopped at the intersection. An investigation determined that the crash was preventable and found that Coskun had run a red light before striking the Toyota. Several hours after the collision, Coskun underwent a breath alcohol test that recorded a blood alcohol concentration equivalent of 0.09. “This is unconscionable,” Ms. Gottlieb’s son, Andrew Gottlieb, told reporters. “Citizens of Maryland, you are not safe because of what happened here today.” #MoCo
