Darker and edgier SM? Listen, I wasn't a huge SM fan growing up, but I still remember-
1) The prophesized future of Crystal Tokyo happens after a global catastrophe that wipes out 95% of the human race.
2) Every story arc culminates in the characters suicide bombing the bad guys.
3) The bad guys are mostly literal demons who kill people and take their places, and which run off of psychic vampirism that, once again, kills its victims.
Like point 2 is kind of lightened because Super Magic Resurrection Powers but like.. bruh.
