The Pentagon has reversed course on Secretary Pete Hegsethโs April โmedical autonomyโ policy, granting all major military branches permission to mandate flu vaccines for recruits in basic training.
The policy shift follows a flu outbreak at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas, where nearly 300 Air Force basic military trainees have reportedly tested positive since early June.
During the voluntary period, approximately 40% of trainees at the base opted to receive the flu shot.
The exception approval letter says the mandate is intended to โmaximize operational readiness,โ protect at-risk populations, and preserve force generation.
But the reversal raises new questions about the Trump administrationโs stated commitment to medical autonomy and religious liberty, especially as vaccine mandates continue to reappear through new exceptions.
