Today, the Courts and Tribunals Bill came before peers in the House of Lords. It includes controversial plans to restrict our ancient right to trial by jury. Andy Burnham has sacked David Lammy and dropped his plans for judge-only trials. Yet ministers still claim that removing the right to elect a jury is the most effective way to reduce the Crown Court backlog. The Institute for Government says the reforms would save just 2% of Crown Court time — not the 20% ministers promised. FSU research has also found that people charged with speech-related offences are almost twice as likely to be acquitted in a Crown Court with a jury than in a magistrates’ court without one. Andy Burnham has been warned to expect a rebellion from Labour peers over these plans. And so he should. Watch FSU Campaigns Officer @MaxHThompson 👇

Amid all the universal praise for Harry Kane following his thoroughly deserved Ballon d’Or triumph, it’s worth remembering something about the country we live in. All it would take for Kane to face a relentless torrent of media criticism, no doubt joined by virtue-signalling politicians and celebrities, would be for him to say any one of the following: • Sex is immutable. • Women’s rights and safeguards should be reserved for biological women. • Subjecting children to so-called ‘gender-affirming care’ is harmful and should not be sanctioned. He wouldn’t need to say all three. Just one would do and many of the same people celebrating him today would suddenly be lining up to condemn him. And this isn’t some idle concern. Other decent, hardworking people have suffered appalling abuse, threats, including death threats, and damage to their careers for expressing views that would barely have raised an eyebrow when Kane was learning his craft as a young footballer. Think about that. What does that tell us about the society we’ve become?

What has been going on at the Welsh Gender Service is a big story. Thanks to NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee's commitment to relative transparency*, we can see it unfold. genderblog.net/welsh-gender-… * it took them at least two years to pull their finger out, mind you

De Vere Latimer House has crafted its very own Pink Gin - because of a very special WW2 connection: British Intelligence working on the site during the war would celebrate operational victories with their favourite drink: pink gin!

Andy Burnham in 2016: “There is nothing socialist about a system of free movement that is used by multi-nationals to undermine wages.” Andy Burnham in 2026: Wants an “honest discussion” about the possibility of a return to free movement between the UK and the EU. The political evolution of a man who discovered that the script changes when he gets a bigger office.
There is nothing socialist about a system of free movement that is used by multi-nationals to undermine wages. WATCH my Brexit speech today.

Interesting to see how many rush in to say Tories Tories Tories! These are the numpties who didn’t make it to the first sentence in the 2nd paragraph. Of course the Tories deserve blame for our lack of resilience. All the more reason for Labour to be doing a lot more, with some urgency, given what it inherited.

It’s a very well written intelligent book. I love the way it is so direct in its process. Sadly that cannot be said of the regulators. Let’s hope it changes.

I have just finished reading Richard Brooks', extraordinary and forensically minute examination of the Post Office scandal, book 'Post Mortem'. I come away with two conclusions uppermost; firstly the insidious malice, towards innocent SubPostmasters, and unlawful actions exhibited by Post Office employees, intent on defending the 'Brand' at any cost. And secondly, and perhaps more worryingly, the so called 'Legal Teams' who aided and abetted the Post Office by prostituting their profession in the pursuit of the huge legal fees they levied. And in some cases even acting outside the law by failing to disclose that which they were legally obliged to do. These 'lawyers' leave their profession in shameful disarray.

I'm excited to announce a new publication: "Should I Say It?": Navigating the Complex Dilemmas of Honesty in High-Performance Gymnastics Coaching. We found that coaches in our study sometimes delayed or softened difficult feedback because they were concerned about damaging athletes’ confidence and motivation. Our new article in The Sport Psychologist explores these dilemmas through an 18-month qualitative study at one UK high-performance gymnastics center. We combined interviews, observations, and video analysis, drawing on perspectives from six coaches, 12 athletes, and seven parents. Honest communication involved continual judgments about what to share, when, and how. Athletes’ developmental stage, performance expectations, and relationships with parents shaped those decisions. For coaches, coach educators, sport psychologists, and researchers studying athlete welfare, the findings highlight the emotional and ethical work behind everyday communication. We recommend opportunities for coaches to rehearse difficult conversations about selection, injury, athlete readiness, and parental expectations. The link is below. If you can't access it and would like a copy, please send me a message. journals.humankinetics.com/v… #SportCoaching #CoachEducation #SportPsychology

The British escape map of the Second World War was printed on silk because paper got men shot. The man who designed it was Christopher Clayton Hutton, a First World War pilot and amateur magician who talked his way into MI9, the department whose only job was getting captured servicemen home. He read 50 Great War escape stories before he started, and the thing that came up in all of them was the map. A paper map fails in every way that matters to a man on the run. It rustles when a guard pats him down. It tears along the folds. It turns to pulp in the first ditch he lies in. And it is too stiff to hide anywhere a search will not find. So Hutton went to the one firm in Britain that could print on silk, which happened to be Waddingtons, who also held the Monopoly licence, and the maps went out folded into the pieces of a board game sent to the camps through fake charities. Others went into cigarette packets, hollow boot heels, and the lining of a flying jacket. Silk is a protein spun by a caterpillar. It is stronger for its weight than steel wire, it folds a thousand times without a crack, it dries in minutes, and it makes no sound. Nothing in the chemical industry of 1940 could do all four, and the rayon they tried when the silk ran short was never as good. Around 400,000 cloth maps were printed. The historians put the men who got home with Hutton's kit in the tens of thousands. The spy gadget that freed more prisoners than any other in the war was a handkerchief, and the handkerchief was made by a worm.
