A walk around my local woodpecker families shows a year like no other.
The cold wet Spring seems to have delayed them, compared to other years.
The first young have fledged, yet others are only hatched.

This young woodpecker near Glendalough in Wicklow can hear its siblings calling in the nearby trees, as well as its parents.
Another successful year for the species.

Delighted to get word this week that a Siskin I ringed in my Wicklow garden last June was caught by a ringer in Germany last weekend - 1,119km distance. Seemingly one of fewer than 50 Irish Siskins ever found outside Ireland/Britain!
