AI makes prototyping easier, but shipping something useful still takes a team. Lessons from our tech team’s PredictPay journey: - Give ideas a path to production - Bring every discipline in early - Make progress testable - Improve the model and system together
AI makes building easier. Turning an idea into a production system and improving it still takes a strong team working closely together. PredictPay, our in-house payment risk model, went from “would be cool if it works” to “it works, and it works really well” through demos, thoughtful scoping, AI & ML explainability, production experiments, and many iterations. We’re sharing the full zero-to-v2 journey in the hope that it inspires more people to bring forward an idea and find great people to build it with. Proud to share the journey with Kyle Gahagan, Skylar Gao, Ross Briden, Patrick Holloran, Fabio Sammarco and everyone across Engineering, Analytics, and Product @affirm who made it possible! tech.affirm.com/predictpay-f…

PredictPay started at our Hackathon with an idea to make smarter AutoPay suggestions using past payment behavior. Team wrote about how we took it from an explainable prototype to production, and what we learned building v1 and v2: tech.affirm.com/predictpay-f…

We moved expensive feature computation out of the checkout path, then had to solve the harder question: how do you know a precomputed value is still right? We wrote about the design, the tradeoffs, and what we learned: medium.com/affirmengineering…

Models change but the data underneath them is what stays. We’re building the Affirm User Data Model to make our user history easier to reassemble across relevant models and products, so each new model can start where the last one finished. Read more here: medium.com/affirmengineering…

A few weeks ago, we shared how we built and deployed a transformer for underwriting at @Affirm. My new post zooms out to the lesson behind that work: changing the model is only one part of changing the modeling system. The Model Is Not the Modeling: tech.affirm.com/the-model-is…

1/ Super excited to share what we’ve been building @Affirm: a transformer-based underwriting model. A 🧵:
