Steel toe takes from an ivory tower đŸ—ïž

I want to apologize to an old colleague of mine. He’d just gotten married and took a 10 day honeymoon (wow!). A month later he did a weekend ski trip (oof!) and couldn’t get WiFi for a closing that got moved up 4 weeks. I filled in for him. I remember the partner saying he was a total ‘liability’ & that he sucked. I laughed and said “yeah - doesn’t want it.” I believed it too. I spent the whole weekend playing ‘hero’ for Deal Team Six. You can ALWAYS count on me. Meanwhile my relationship was on borrowed time and hair thinning rapidly. I’m V10 baby! He got ‘stealth’ dismissed that Monday. They let him keep his website photo for 2 months while he found something new. He did. Fast forward a few years - I see it way different. He was bright, and hard working, and put his ppl first. He liked his life. He had balls. But I was racin’! - king of the rats. And my apartment in midtown actually had vermin. A totally delusional period of my life. One of those lessons you learn in hindsight. Hope you’re doing well brother.

Translation: amazing / untouchable / endlessly renewal gig for elite lawyers with agency or ambition (either/or!)
A paradox: law firms almost always own nothing. Their assets are their lawyers, who by law are immune to noncompetes and can (and, now, do) walk out the door to similar firms all the time. The legal profession is organized into houses of cards
that just reconstitute elsewhere.

I like how @TiredBambooLaw said what he said. Rly intentional & generally spot on. Zack’s response has been closer to what I’m seeing as of the last 4-5 months. Justin’s POV before that. Even at partner levels the tech is a sound board and a spring board that fundamentally helps the lawyer “get to” judgment. And for the associate without the benefit of decades of reps, finding it quicker than door knocks n hair loss đŸȘŽ
I disagree. Too much junior associate work is rote tasks on tiny pieces of huge matters, without understanding how it all fits together. AI can provide that context, answer questions busy seniors don’t have time for, and help juniors develop judgment much faster.

Bald dudes can use Harvey too đŸŽ± It’s just funny how the door knocks are sooo key as a junior but slightly less as a middie and so on up the ladder. Once you have a base you can stack and stack with nuance from the tech nudges. Heck, as a partner, I’d live in Harvey. No one around you can speak it as well as Harvey can write it

Yeah, maybe. They’ve been SUPER focused on lawyer redlines for a few years now. I encourage the bots to pivot like a fourth year ran out of Skadden for using the wrong NDA form. Medical and math should be on a tee. Swing, bot. Let it rip
Stay alive because over the next 20 years they’re going to cure *everything*

I haven’t commented on this bc it’s low IQ legal. She doesn’t have the requisite merit for that position (it’s a speaking gig; you need to be hyper verbal). She will find a home chit chatting politics like the rest of the pretty pundits & wigged men fit for clicks. She’ll be fine - arguably better off. Wish her well. Separately, on the vernacular warfare that’s taken place on JD v lawyer v attorney: funny to see it unfold. I body slammed the bar on take one, but many smart n capable ppl have failed. Everyone is too busy to care. All she had to do was say she’s unlicensed to practice and we’d have respected her spine. No one wants a press secretary who engages actively in law. You need a speaker, a persona, a prop. Not a lawyer or an attorney. The Zach Attack was fun while it lasted
Kate Zacharia tells Jack Posobiec that she was distracted when she took the bar exam because she had just gotten engaged, but it didn't matter anyway because passing it was "inconsequential" since she "knew I wouldn’t need the bar in China." When asked why she never took the bar again, she says it was because she started having kids, and it was "okay and acceptable" to label herself a "lawyer" for the work she was doing.

I can’t think of a profession less endangered my AI. The #1 propped up sector is law. An all time heater. A renaissance of need

This means Ropes is pledging more capital to AI than Kirkland did in pursuing its own. They’ll forego $100M in collections a year. (Math is 1000 associates at 1000 an hour, times 100.) But it’s more than that rly, since a good chunk of the associates are 1500 p/h. Kirkland was $500M over 5 years. I don’t think many firms follow this. I implemented with +/- 10 hours of play đŸ‘Ÿ
As silly as this sounds, this is actually (at least directionally) a really important policy for firms to implement.

Lawyers who came of age in this period operate at the level of a 62 year old partner. A take I just won’t change my mind on. Hyper steroidal

This is like me with ping pong. I was so good that it became a chore to win, so I stopped keeping score w friends - bc I only had something to lose. Reality was I’d either win (shocker) or lose (SHOCKER). Bet that’s the K&E play here - avoid caps lock at all costs. Mystery is intrigue. Intrigue beats fatigue. Bill on bandits
NEW: Kirkland & Ellis will stop sharing its financial figures with the legal industry’s flagship ranking of law firm profits and revenues, concluding it is no longer “appropriate or necessary” to disclose results. With @kayewiggins & @journosooz
