Don’t choose to do things that make you look good. Tackle the tough ones. You’ll look rugged and hardened but the respect you’ll inspire will go deep.

Copied from fb.... My daughter came home from school and said, “Mom, you’re not going to believe what happened in history class today.” Her teacher told the class they were going to play a game. He walked around the room and whispered to each kid whether they were a witch or just a regular person. Then he gave the instructions: “Form the biggest group you can without a witch. If your group has even one, you all fail.” She said the whole room instantly lit up with suspicion. Everyone started interrogating each other. Are you a witch? How do we know you’re not lying? Some kids clung to one big group, but most broke off into smaller, exclusive cliques. They turned away anyone who seemed uncertain, nervous, or gave off even the slightest hint of being guilty. The energy shifted fast. Suddenly everyone was suspicious of everyone. Whispers. Finger-pointing. Side-eyes. Trust dissolved in minutes. Finally, when all the groups were formed, the teacher said, “Alright, time to find out who fails. Witches, raise your hands.” And not one hand went up. The whole class exploded. “Wait! You messed up the game!” And then the teacher dropped the bomb: “Did I? Were there any actual witches in Salem, or did everyone just believe what they were told?” My daughter said the room went dead silent. That’s when it hit them. No witch was ever needed for the damage to happen. Fear had already done its work. Suspicion alone divided the entire class, turning community into chaos. And isn’t that exactly what we’re seeing today? Different words, same playbook. Instead of “witch,” it’s liberal, conservative, vaxxed, unvaxxed, pro-this, anti-that. The labels shift, but the tactic is the same. Get people scared. Get them suspicious. Get them divided. Then sit back while trust crumbles. The danger was never the witch. The danger is the rumor. The suspicion. The fear. The planted lies. Refuse the whisper. Don’t play the game. Because the second we start hunting “witches,” we’ve already lost.

For a comfort reading on large and medium devices, a text-block should be between 800-1200 pixels wide. #TitbitUI

The state of UI's knowledge today seems a bit higgledy-piggledy so I'm going to share a tidbit of UI knowledge everyday - also mostly as a Ui journal for myself.

Rewatching #TraitorsUK : Did anyone pick up that the last group of people to enter the breakfast room are always the people the traitors thought to execute?

Just had a fascinating lunch with a 22-year-old Stanford grad. Smart kid. Perfect resume. Something felt off though. He kept pausing mid-sentence, searching for words. Not complex words - basic ones. Like his brain was buffering. Finally asked if he was okay. His response floored me. "Sometimes I forget words now. I'm so used to having ChatGPT complete my thoughts that when it's not there, my brain feels... slower." He'd been using AI for everything. Writing, thinking, communication. It had become his external brain. And now his internal one was getting weaker. Made me think about calculators. Remember how teachers said we needed to learn math because "you won't always have a calculator"? They were wrong about that. But maybe they were right about something deeper. We're running the first large-scale experiment on human cognition. What happens when an entire generation outsources their thinking? Don’t get me wrong, I’m beyond excited about what AI and AI agents will do for people in the same way that I was excited in 2009 when the App Store was launched. But thinking out loud you got to think this guy I met with isn't the onnnnnly one that's going to be completely dependent on AI.

Big van from Aleppo arrived yesterday evening at Ernesto’s free vet clinic, full of cats to be treated and a donkey that needed an x-ray and urgent care. Tomorrow we return to Aleppo with our mobile ambulance to treat the animals, and we are considering going around all the Syrian provinces because we are receiving requests for help. dry food was something prohibitive for the animals, now we want to be able to distribute some first aid for these animals, they too are very affected by the situation, we need help to have large quantities, last month we were on alert because we had suspected what happened and therefore we had asked you for help to increase our reserves. well as you can see providence has been very helpful, and thanks to those reserves we were able to help Aleppo this week, but our reserves were limited for our animals, so we need to do it again, what we can ask our friends is to report our organization to the big organizations that help animals and ask them to support us, in these years we have always had a great reputation and collaboration with anyone who has helped us, providing documentation and receipts. Share our mission and talk about us because now the work is being really hard and for all the country , and obviously your donations are also important to us. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/… ernestosanctuary.org/donatio… Bank account: House of Cats Ernesto Iban : IT66R0302501601TB8880329477 ( just for Sepa transfer ) paypal.me/ErnestoSanctuary myevent.com/gunthersfamilyer…

My aunt tells me that she’s fought against the erasure of her existence her whole life. My grandfather stopped her from attending high school at 15. Her dream was to be a painter. She was married off at 17. The Taliban barred her daughters from attending school in 1996. In Pakistan, she was not allowed to work as a refugee. She kept a small pack of watercolour pens in her suitcase for decades. She is 69 now. Her biggest regret is not pushing back. She tells me I must, and every Afghan girl must do the same. “Fight back. Fight with your mind, with all your might.”

Appeal 🆘 ‼️ As animal lovers, we are appealing to all animal lovers, all over the world. We need your help and support for a special mission. We are NOT appealing for donations, but we need someone who may know of an animal rights organization in Israel, that has the right contacts and above all that has the COGAT license, to allow us to bring in a container of animal food only, into the north of GAZA. We need someone with the right permits and permissions to allow us to save animals in Gaza from imminent death. If you have any contacts within IDF or with animal rights organisations in Israel that can help with this mission- please send us details and contact information. The situation is critical. Send us private msg if you really able to help. To save a life to save the whole world.

Of course LLM performance has "hit a wall" - language is so much more than representing the statistical patterns between different words and generating those patterns in response to a prompt. E.g. see Jakobson's 6 functions of language:

wow, Google Maps turns 20 in February. In my opinion, it's probably the greatest digital application ever. The consumer surplus associated with it is just off the charts. googleblog.blogspot.com/2005…

Millenials being the more tech literate generation give off strong chances of becoming the “elderly tech expert-hermit in the woods” in every dystopian-survival fiction. The only ones left who can wring up a DOS attack at the tip of a keyboard.
