Woah! That was a terrifying experience driving the #coquihalla, just north of Britton Creek. I’m shaking! 😱💔 We made it through just as they were stopping southbound traffic @DriveBC #bcwildfires #Kamloops 7pm August 15, 2021 – at Merritt, British Columbia

Not easy writing about climate without using the words “unprecedented” or “record-setting,” but I almost pulled it off.

The world may be barreling towards climate disaster but rapidly eliminating planet-heating emissions means global temperatures could stabilize within just a couple of decades.
All is not lost, we need to double down our efforts to decarbonise.

Imagine getting to be alive during the vanishingly thin slice of history where we understand the full gravity of the climate crisis and still have time to do something about it.
Feeling grateful, fired up and ready to do the damn thing.
“Practical, funded and deliverable plans [by governments] to keep us below the supposedly safe limits [of heating] are almost non-existent. Urgent climate action was needed decades ago – now we’re almost out of time.”

Likely not intentional, but see this normalization of disaster:
1.5 C warming portrayed as safe
2 C warming portrayed as moderate
Only 3 C portrayed as truly bad
Like normalizing "small scale" nuclear war, this is a dangerous path.
The difference between 1.5°C, 2°C or 3-4°C average global warming can sound marginal.
In fact, they represent vastly different scenarios for the future of humanity.

Let me get this straight - 700+ people died in BC because of the heat wave, a village burst into flames after breaking temperature records 3 days in a row, the ocean caught on fire, & governments aren't starting a WWII-style mobilization to create a healthy & just future?
wtf.

The news about Lytton is really getting to me. Not just that the town burned to the ground, that people lost everything, that animals were left behind, but everything that is happening in the world right now led to this. This is the reality of “back to normal”. I am losing hope.
