Today in 1950: Phillies reliever Jim Konstanty was named NL MVP, the first relief pitcher in either league to win the award.
Konstanty pitched in 74 games (a record at the time), going 16-7 with 22 saves for the pennant-winning Whiz Kids.
The kicker? Philadelphia then handed their closer the ball to start Game 1 of the World Series against the Yankees. He threw 8 innings of 4-hit ball but lost 1-0.
