We don't carve pumpkins in Scotland, we carve neeps (turnips)!* I think they look far scarier and that's what they're for, to ward off bad spirits, keeping us safe with their light. *of course people do carve pumpkins too, but this is the real tradition.

It's no easy task to scoop out the insides though, you can see why people changed to the softer pumpkin in some places. I made sure to have an extra sharp knife and my hardest spoon on hand to work through this thing - any kids doing this had better be well supervised!

Everybody, meet Maisie! I've had a new Barketing Intern join the team, but it'll be a wee while until she's ready to come out exploring Scotland with me. Still, you can expect to see a lot more of her in the future!

It seems like she's a little camera shy or maybe was just annoyed I picked her up away from the chew toy, because she's normally like a little whirlwind right now!

The Isle of Tiree might have beautiful beaches, but legend says something dangerous stalks these sands. Watch out for the Cù Sith - Scotland's Fairy Dog.

Lunch doesn't get much better than this at Oban's Green Shack! There's a strange trend on social media of people (who have usually never visited Scotland) trying to pretend we don't have good food here or that it's bland and boring. Leaves me equal parts annoying and perplexed.

We have a lot more than seafood on offer, but this is one of my favourite spots to stop for lunch. It's not a fancy place, but it does the freshest of seafood for very reasonable prices. My usual go to is langoustines in garlic butter or mussels in white wine and garlic!

Almost got caught out by passing torrential rain showers on my last tour while visiting Auchindrain - Scotland's last inhabited traditional township. Safe to say, the old houses are still watertight and if the peat fire had been on then we could have hunkered down for hours!

Cosy season is definitely here. I've got much more to tell you about Auchindrain (just ten minutes south of Inveraray) soon, but today I've got a mountain of articles, emails and messages to get through first!

I'm spending today around the Galloway Forest, so no better time to share one of my favourite stories from the Wars of Independence. In early 1307, King Robert the Bruce had tentatively emerged from his winter hiding place, he had survived his first test...

The rocks were followed by arrows and eventually by charging Scotsmen splitting the column in two. Many fled back up the path they had just marched down rather than fight. This carved boulder high above Loch Trool gives a view of the steep slopes used by the Scots.

Legend says that this was where Bruce gave the signal to start the ambush. This was more of a skirmish than a battle, but news of the victory would have been whispered around the country. The Scots knew their King had returned and that little flame of resistance was spreading.
