We made these films with @sgcol and the community members around Nevado del Ruiz because THEIR experiences are central to understanding how to prepare for future risk youtu.be/1KVz6ACZQa8 . In doing this we learned even more. 2/3
and in Ecuador with @IGecuador . Our approach to these films - collaborating with and for local communities also fed into the VolFilm project where we worked on a series of experiential films 4/6...youtu.be/Czzibq2LBbQ
but also for them to tell their story in their words, and limiting the imagery that might not represent their experience or responses. As well as Nevado del Ruiz with @sgcol we worked in St Vincent with @uwiseismic .3/6.. youtu.be/iJ_lLwiB_h8
youtu.be/1KVz6ACZQa8 These films were part of a series created in the communities where we worked during @StrevaProject - the films were motivated by the words of the community members who wished to remember what had happened - to convey messages about the risk but..2/6
Long eruptions are helped by making sure shelter conditions are tolerable (looking after the aspects shown here which can push people out of shelters, back home), and that efforts are made to minimise damage to livelihoods in the unsafe zone.
By examining the eruption in detail we understand patterns of behaviour, and what to look for in the monitoring data. We can also understand what makes life hard for people during eruptions and how to help. This shows the pattern of evacuation for the smaller eruptions in 70s
The Botanic Station experimented with ash and crops to find out what worked well for improving conditions and neighbouring islands donated plants & seed. The Botanics grew small plants to distribute to farmers. Sketches from experiments sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
1902-03 there was a series of large explosions at #LaSoufriere on May 6th-7th then more on 21st May, 3rd September, 15th-16th October & 22nd March 1903. Yes! A long time. These are maps of the ash from this paper: sciencedirect.com/science/ar… by @davidmpyle @VolcanoJenni @terepantere
This picture from a paper by @PaulCole23 and @VincieRichie shows @VincieRichie next to deposits from these flows - showing material from two historical, and one 'pre-historical' eruption. sciencedirect.com/science/ar… #LaSoufriere likes to blow and flow.
🧵In terms of #LaSoufriere is the past the key to the future?
We collaborated with @uwiseismic to understand the 'story' of these past eruptions in the deposits, the archives and via interview. Our colleague @scarlett_jazmin has also worked on the social historical impacts.
