SAMSON (2017-2025)
For any fans of the Bearded Beast still here: last Monday I had to say goodbye to my wild man. He very quickly + unexpectedly became ill - 4th stage lymphoma. But he was strong to the end and flushed two bunnies the day before he died.
I'm not posting this to tell you it's awful. I'm sure it's awful but I haven't actually read it because I don't need to. And neither do you.
Just a reminder that there are lots of smart things out there you could read instead!
I wish I were surprised that my PhD institution could be so repressive and callous with regard to genocide. But I'm not.
At least the lines in the sand are clear now. Surely all this spells the end of appeals for unis to "protect" students and create "safe" spaces.
And to be very clear, *all* the suspensions and PNG designations are horrifically unjustifiable. For more information, read @NYUFJPalestine's press release:

Fate didn't want me to attend the MLA after all.
I thought the scratchy throat I've had recently was just due to the extremely dry air in my apartment. But alas, I have Covid.
How long should I isolate? CDC guidelines are useless now since they've thrown in the towel.
I'm going to the upcoming conference b/c it's the end of my term on the exec committee of a forum and my former advisee is presenting on one of our panels. But I had already decided not to renew due to cost, inconvenience, etc. And now this is an even better reason.

Non-Portuguese speakers are also free to weigh in!
This spring I'm teaching a class called Brazilian Jukebox for students of Portuguese (undergrads). What songs should I include?
Suggestions for secondary readings are also welcome (these can be in English).

I've had two MRIs of my brain done in the last four days and let me tell you that if they ask you what kind of music you want to listen to you should choose opera.
There's something calming about the clang and clatter of the machine + the strenuous strains of operatic singing.
An entire nation cheers on a sexy assassin who loves his mom and the media tries to get everyone to hate him b/c he grew up rich -- as if the fact that the health care industry can wreck even relatively rich people doesn't prove his point all the better.
Sorry ain't working!
Luigi Mangione really messed up by going to a Mickey D's in Altoona, PA.
Everyone knows that when you go to Altoona you gottta eat Altoona Pizza (with American cheese).

I usually wander the bakery at Wegman's supermarket admiring the pretty treats though I'm not that into actually eating sweets. But I'm withering away b/c of a bad case of TMJ and feeling glum due to other painful ailments as well. So I decided to take the plunge.

Has anyone (critic/theorist) written anything interesting on the concept of an archetype versus a prototype?
I opened up Twitter this morning and this was the first thing I read.

ALT I woke up with a fire near my face, like a meter away, and I was still holding my son’s arm, so I started running, thinking I’m running with my son.... I was screaming at him to run fast before they bomb again, and then I felt like my son was light, as if there was no weight on the arm. So, I looked and didn’t see my son anywhere near me, and that was when I discovered that I was holding only his arm
Wow! Hats off to this editorial board.
