1/ It is rather galling to hear Lord Falconer and pals complain about the Lords scrutinising his dreadful bill and imply some sort of skullduggery is going on. This is a de facto government bill masquerading as a PMB in order to dampen down Labour opposition in the commons.

Important to remember that the Assisted Dying bill was in no one’s manifesto, had inadequate scrutiny in the commons, passed with a much reduced majority at 3rd reading, is attracting increasing opposition from experts and that Lords have the right and duty to scrutinise it well.

If you believe free speech is for you but not your political opponents, you're illiberal. If no contrary evidence could change your beliefs, you're a fundamentalist. If you believe the state should punish those with contrary views, you're a totalitarian. If you believe political opponents should be punished with violence or death, you're a terrorist.

A brief fact-check of Lord Falconer’s speech this morning, some of which was misleading or at least missing important context:

All these "London is finished" tweets are massively insulting to the residents and blatantly not written by anyone who has actually lived here for any length of time.

Major unresolved problems with the Leadbeater bill: an A-Z guide. A is for Anorexia. Eating disorder charities and experts have warned that the bill leaves the door open for sufferers to qualify and receive an assisted death: xitter.cf/ChelseaRoff/status/193…
1/ @vicderbyshire asked a simple question: why did you vote against every amendment eating disorder experts urged you to pass to close the anorexia loophole? A thread on the many eating disorder experts she chose to ignore ⬇️

Seriously @CBMWorg? Christian parents who have raised their children to know and love God, to be committed members of a church, obedient in godliness, actively pursuing holiness, reading God’s word diligently, cultivating a faithful prayer life, fasting regularly and most importantly submitting themselves fully to the Lordship of Christ… have failed to truly accomplish their mission in passing on the faith if said child is doing all that into adulthood as a single Christian (i.e., what the author describes as “by himself”)? Unless said Christian child is married and has children of their own they are, “of course not” in “any position to pass the faith on to another generation”? You seriously think this is a faithful reflection of Scripture’s teaching (which I note is *entirely absent* from the article, unlike the musings of ancient philosophers, quotes from The New York Post and lessons from mythical heroes). And you’re OK with publishing that awful caricature of single Christians as being either no-hope losers leeching off their parents or alternatively money-hungry, self-indulgent showboats? I’d appreciate hearing the answers to these questions. And I expect many others would too. (If that’s you, feel free to repost this tweet). @LigonDuncan @DennyBurk @waynegrudem @ThoennesErik @DrThomasWhite @colinsmo Excerpt from the Spring 2025 issue of Eikon 👉🏻 cbmw.org/journal/how-to-rais…

Perhaps a major attraction to Christianity in Britain in years to come will be that we don’t kill our infants & old people Belief - even residual - that we are all made in the image of God is what leads us to protect the most vulnerable rather than dispatch them as inconvenient

The Leadbeater bill is on a knife-edge; but if it passes, you can expect in 10-15 years to hear its backers saying, “Of course, in retrospect…” and “Hindsight is 20/20” and “Had we known then what we know now…” Thread on what we know now, June 10 2025:

Astonishing to read the things Kim Leadbeater MP is saying in today's debate, promising to tighten loopholes when she fought to reject the exact amendments that would have tightened those loopholes during in Committee Stage.

For the mover of a bill to present such a huge number of amendments to their *own* bill suggests a serious lack of confidence in its safety and rigour. In 20 years I’ve not seen anything so shambolic. Even supporters of the bill must surely see that the bill can’t pass like this.

The intervention from the Royal College of Psychiatrists should be the end of this Bill - they "cannot support the Bill as it stands." - it "makes no provision to assess unmet needs at any stage, nor consult others involved in the person’s care or life." - it "does not aim to improve a person’s health and its intended consequence is death." - "There are not enough consultant psychiatrists to do what the Bill asks" - "The Mental Capacity Act does not provide a framework for assessing decisions about ending one’s own life" - "Professionals must be able to conscientiously object to involvement in any part of the process" - "Assisted dying/assisted suicide (AD/AS) is not a treatment" - note they use dying and suicide throughout - they won't play the language game. These concerns were noted throughout committee stage but Leadbeater refused to fix them. First she said judges were the best safeguard. When they said no she changed to psychiatrists. Now they have said no. It's time to 'Kill the Bill'.
