BDA Update: Bandar Abbas Southern Fleet HQ
Mar 18 high-res imagery confirms another wave of strikes near the primary navy piers
โก๏ธImpacts focused heavily on the infrastructure and support buildings just off the waterfront
โก๏ธActive fires with at least 6 distinct structures emitting heavy smoke
The smoke plumes are likely obscuring additional structural damage

Prior to Operation Epic Fury, the Iranian regime used the Karaj Surface-to-Surface Missile Plant to assemble ballistic missiles that threatened Americans, neighboring countries, and commercial shipping. The photo dated March 1, 2026, shows the plant prior to U.S. strikes. The image dated March 11, 2026, shows the same location after U.S. forces struck the facility with precision munitions.

Hours ago, U.S. forces successfully employed multiple 5,000-pound deep penetrator munitions on hardened Iranian missile sites along Iranโs coastline near the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian anti-ship cruise missiles in these sites posed a risk to international shipping in the strait.

U.S. forces aren't holding back on the mission to sink the entire Iranian Navy. Today, an Iranian drone carrier, roughly the size of a WWII aircraft carrier, was struck and is now on fire.

๐ซIranโs IRGC claims to have struck USS Abraham Lincoln with ballistic missiles. LIE.
โ
The Lincoln was not hit. The missiles launched didnโt even come close. The Lincoln continues to launch aircraft in support of CENTCOMโs relentless campaign to defend the American people by eliminating threats from the Iranian regime.

An Iranian Jamaran-class corvette was struck by U.S. forces during the start of Operation Epic Fury. The ship is currently sinking to the bottom of the Gulf of Oman at a Chah Bahar pier. As the President said, members of Iranโs armed forces, IRGC and police โmust lay down your weapons.โ Abandon ship.

U.S MARINES SECURE FLAG DETAINED BY WHO: The World Health Organization refused to return the American flag that hung in front of it, saying it has not approved the U.S. withdrawal from the agencyโand that ๐บ๐ธ owes them compensation. Good news: the U.S. Marines now have the flag.

Many people catch a glimpse of an open Virginia Payload Tube, which first appeared on Block III bows, and notice the pattern appears to indicate a 7 Tomahawk capacity. I've answered this question enough times that I decided to make a graphic and explain.
TLDR: VPTs are 6-round but repurpose Ohio's 7-round form factor
Virginia-class started out with individual VLS tubes, brought over from Los Angeles-class. The Ohio-class SSGN multiple all-up-round canister (MAC) was a success in both decreased load times and complexity, as well as made room for future modularity (think Conventional Prompt Strike). The size constraints in the bow of a Virginia-class submarine bow are much different than the mid section of an Ohio-class boat. So, the resolution was genius in that it both maintained some common components to save manufacturing costs, while taking advantage of that exact form factor to solve size constraint issues with structural attachment and system interfaces. They used the center hole for that purpose. It is "plugged" and used for interface cabling and structural components rather than a missile (AKA โumbilicalโ or "strongback"). While the VPT MAC and Ohio MAC are not entirely the same because of the significant depth differences, both maintaining the 87" diameter they can "Design for Affordability"; making use of common tooling, parts, supply chains, testing, and certifications

The George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group got underway yesterday for COMPTUEX training and operating ~80 nautical miles off the east coast (as of 40 mins ago).
Current composition:
- USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)
- USS Gonzalez (DDG 66)
- USS Ross (DDG 71)
- USS Donald Cook (DDG 75)
- USS Mason (DDG 87)
In January, GHWBCSG conducted integrated underway ops and Group Sail in preparation for Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX). โOne key evolution included an air-defense exercise conducted at the carrier strike group level - synchronizing sensors, weapons systems, and communications across surface ships and air defense assets to counter simulated threats. CSG-10 also completed a coordinated Strait Transit, requiring precise navigation, maneuvering, and communications among multiple platforms. The evolution provided a realistic opportunity to exercise Strike Group command and control while operating in a constrained maritime environment. It also offered newly reported Sailors with experience and a glimpse of what to expect during their upcoming deployment.โ (DVIDS)
Transit available via public AIS:

In a pre-dawn action this morning, the Department of War, in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, apprehended a stateless, sanctioned dark fleet motor tanker without incident.
The interdicted vessel, M/T Sophia, was operating in international waters and conducting illicit activities in the Caribbean Sea. The U.S. Coast Guard is escorting M/T Sophia to the U.S. for final disposition.
Through Operation Southern Spear, the Department of War is unwavering in its mission to crush illicit activity in the Western Hemisphere. We will defend our Homeland and restore security and strength across the Americas. @DeptofWar @DHSgov @USCG #OpSouthernSpear

Replying to @SecNavPhelan
@SECNAV @USNavyCNO @SecWar @SeanParnellASW @potus unpopular opinion but NECESSARY discussion: with Navy shipbuilding in crisis, a potential conflict in the pacific, we need to talk about the surface fleetโs small size, & the lack of naval gunnery available for shore bombardment.
The reality is, aegis destroyers arenโt going to be tasked with shore bombardment to support @USMC forced entry landing operations.
They cost too much, wont be risked near shore batteries of anti ship missiles or or shore based artillery, or air assets, & the 5โ mounts are woefully INSUFFICIENT for shore bombardment duties to support Marine amphibious operations anyway.
And the idea that carrier & Marine aircraft will pick up the slack is simply not realistic. Not enough air assets to go around, not enough time on station, maintenance to support that isnt feasible, & cant compete with the sheer volume of ordnance an Iowa class BB can deliver in support of Marine over the beach operations.
And lets face it: cost of operating that many F/A-18s with JDAMs & missiles vs cost of magazines full of power & high capacity or armor piercing 16โ shells is stark: parking an Iowa class battleship off shore to carry out unlimited fire missions is far cheaper & more effective.
More: New Jersey & Wisconsin are literally pristine & capable of being re activated in a short time.
They could be upgraded to latest satcomms, data links, block IV & V Tomahawks, ship attack tomahawks & replace 5โ secondary mounts with VOS cells to further increase their projection power.
Add additional CIWS/Phalanx for point defense, rolling air frame & evolved Sea Sparrow batteries & their ability to defend themselves dramatically improves.
Further, those VLS cells can hold SM-3 or SM-6 missiles that any Arleigh Burke Destroyer escort can use to defend the Iowa & her escort.
One more thing i see no one talking about: how many Chinese PLAN assets would be needed to try to counter a modernized Iowa class bb surface task force? That would dramatically take pressure off Carrier Battle Groups operating in the pacific. And no one questions the survivability of the hulls that make up the Iowas.
They were retired when we had no near peer adversary to worry about as too expensive to keep operating. Is that same argument & rationale true/relevant today? I think the answer is no.
Does this put a strain on the oiler fleet? Maybeโ supporting an iowaโs fuel needs is a lot. But the turn around is that potentially Iowas can support fueling her escorts. And an Iowa class surface task group brings additional ASW helos to the pacific.
Please give serious thought to returning the New Jersey & the Wisconsin to active duty in the fleet with the upgrades i described.
