Today I remind myself that
“It is our duty to fight for our freedom.
It is our duty to win.
We must love each other and support each other.
We have nothing to lose but our chains.”

The question shouldn't be: “Which rights must we sacrifice to meet a deficit target?”
But rather: “What kind of society can we build with our available resources?”
Fiscal rules are institutional choices, not laws of nature. They shouldn't dictate our collective goals.
Of course, *checks notes*, the issues stifling economic growth are regulatory and NOT the macroeconomic policies 🫠
Also, bathi you having rights (particularly environmental rights) is why we don’t have economic growth

There’s so much violence in this notion that poor people must entrepreneur their way out of poverty and structural inequality. In what enabling environment must this happen exactly 🤷🏾♀️
We direct our profound sense of entitlement toward a Black-led government, demanding that the state conjure endless jobs, while wilfully ignoring the stark reality that it is the white minority who still holds and sustains the actual economy, writes Phapano Phasha.

To think the 2026 MTBPS provides the medium term framework up to 2030...
This MTBPS 2026, the final nail. RIP 🕊️🕊️🕊️ to the NDP.
Not even a last kick from the dying horse 😭…
With a fiscal anchor to sink the economy.
“Heterodox economics is an avowedly political project not a social scientific effort to better understand the world”
😂😂😂😂😂😂
The fatal challenge to heterodox economics is that there isn't actually orthodox economics.
Just take a few recent Nobels: behavioral, information failure, institutions, bubbles, financial fragility, labor monopsony (sort of), Schumpeterian creative destruction, etc.
Not to mention RCTs which are emblematic of how much economic research is empirical and only lightly if at all structural.
The real difference is methods. Heterodox economics is an avowedly political project not a social scientific effort to better understand the world. And I have nothing against political projects just shouldn't confuse the two.

SA’s richest are getting richer, while the poorest are being left further behind. But why? Since 2020, South African billionaires have grown 130% wealthier, even as millions continue to face deepening economic hardship.

Given the dramatic increase in the price of electricity (essentially an administered price) this would be a quick win in South Africa.
We should zero rate VAT for electricity.
Andy Burnham confirms that VAT will be removed from electricity bills starting this Thursday.

A new research paper finds that catch-up development is largely a myth.
Since 1960, the income gap between advanced economies (the core) and developing economies (the periphery) has widened by 170–270%, depending on the currency concept.
Global inequality is getting worse.

A film I didn’t know I needed 😍
“Marxism & Period Pains is a bold and pedagogical exploration of the intersections between class, labour, and gender. By making visible the connections between physical pain and structural oppression, the film invites dialogue and empathy,”
