The cat is out of the bag. I’m driving around florida filming a new series that we will be releasing later this year — and guess what! @SMB_Attorney and @SuccessWithJake were my first two guests. We don’t want to give away too much just yet, but follow me here, or on YouTube to follow along.
Had an amazing time today visiting one of my favorite local businesses, Florida Event Decor, with former client and friend @SuccessWithJake and @SBA_Ray 🔥

You can have it all.
A great family. A career you’re proud of. Your health.
A strong marriage. Real friends. Strong faith. Money that works for you.
I used to say you could have it all without really believing it.
Now I know it’s true.

I’ve tried to explain to people why I can’t just stop.
It’s not about the money.
It’s the building.
The creating. The solving. The growing.
It’s a rush. And I’m addicted to it.

The phone call era is dead.
I still believe you connect better on a call.
But it doesn’t matter if nobody picks up.
Text first.
Get the response.
Then get them on the phone.
Meet people where they actually are.
I’m going to a business broker conference next month to promote my new SBA lending company and instead of a typical tradeshow booth, I’m bringing one of @SuccessWithJake’s giant post cards.
Drop your best concept below. The one with the most likes gets printed!
The goal is to get business brokers to want to work with us as their go-to SBA lending partner.
Go!

We are getting requests to build these custom postcard backdrops a lot lately.
Planners see it at one event, then want their own version.

I told the story recently of the dinner where I was sitting next to a woman who had made partner at a prominent biglaw firm *that very day.*
We were chatting lightly about life, work and family and I said “You can have it all.”
She laughed and said “I know! You can’t have it all.”
I snapped back… “CAN have it all.”
In hindsight, I regret saying that because it probably made her feel bad.
And the truth is she’s right.
By its strict definition, it’s impossible to “have it all.”
In fact, I was talking to a good friend Friday and we were going through life category by category.
“Work, family…”
“What else is there?” I asked him?
“What would be on my list if I was a normal person.”
He laughed. He was puzzled too.
80+ hours per week... at least. That’s how much I’d guess I work inclusive of marketing and general thinking about business.
The rest of the time, I’m at school dropoffs, school events, fun activities for the kids, date nights, church, etc.
I go burn out level hard in both categories.
There’s very little left for me on the margins.
Someone I know from work and socials came and visited me recently on the weekend.
He admitted he “wanted to see if the lifestyle I portray is truly the lifestyle I actually live.”
I thought that was funny.
My mom overheard him and chimed in with back-handed motherly comment.
“The one thing I’ll say about Eric is he uses every minute he has with his kids.”
Thanks Mom but what did you mean by “the one thing”? Ha
Anyways, I’m getting to my point.
I’m reminded of the old college joke:
“Good grades, a social life and/or sleep, you can only pick two.”
In the adult world, it’s 15+ categories: good income, good family, good health, finances, sleep, social life, fun, etc.
And you can really only pick two or three and do them well.
Maybe you can do more but if so I haven’t figured it out yet?
But here’s the thing:
You gotta remember what you’re trying to accomplish with all this.
For me, and I think most of us, the answer is obvious.
Cue the cliche “what you’ll think about on your death bed” or “live to work, don’t work to live” quotes.
And I think it’s so much more than that.
You can absolutely have a kickass career.
Crush it for your clients and people.
Care deeply about your work.
Make a good income.
Build something cool.
Leave a professional legacy.
And you can still make it to school dropoffs.
Make it to the field trips and school events.
Take the awesome family vacations.
Have good relationships with your kids.
But you’re not going to sleep great.
And your office is probably going to be messy.
And you’re not going to have a ton of friends or fun.
When (if, I should say) I get to the gates of heaven, I’m guessing I’ll probably leave behind three cups on my desk, be a little soft in the midsection, bald from stress, and have deep bags under my eyes.
But, you know what guys, that’s cool.
I spent the weekend camping with the family at Disney and got a visit from my good friend,
@SuccessWithJake, and his family.
Watching this ultra successful serial entrepreneur chase his kids around and do waterslides was a great reminder that us fellas are not alone.
If you’re not feeling the pinch or the push and pull from life, frankly, you’re not doing enough.
In the end, you can have “it all.” You just need to be careful how you define the word “all.”
We live in a time of a never ending push for more. With social media fueling relative comparisons.
You need to get comfortable doing your best and being kind to yourself.
For me, great family and great work is enough. I’ll work on the six pack in the next lifetime.
One thing I’m really struggling with as a dad in my 40s.
The next 15 years are my prime earning years as a professional.
The work I did the first 15 years (25-40) are set to pay off the next 15 years.
But those are also my kid’s prime childhood years.
When I’m 50 my oldest will be out of the house.
When I’m 55 only my baby girl will be left.
It’s a “yes, and” type of answer that requires a lot of attention and intention.
But this is something I think about all the time. If you’re a dad over 60—how did you experience this?

4 years ago today, three BigLaw-trained M&A lawyers launched a firm to serve the deals BigLaw refused to touch.
Just a couple short years later, @smblawgroup had dethroned every white shoe firm in America to become the #1 M&A law firm in Texas by deal count.
And man, what a wild ride it has been!
4.5 years ago, @SMB_Attorney and I were on the phone chatting about how much his DM's had blown up (while still anon) with active deals in need of a good M&A lawyer.
Finding a lawyer wasn't hard.
But a good one?
Those ones were $2,000+ an hour, populated expensive downtown offices, and staffed transactions with a couple basketball teams of lawyers.
And candidly, those guys just weren't interested in $3.5 million main street deals.
Conversely, while Eric and I were those BigLaw guys, we wanted nothing more than to do main street deals.
So throwing caution to the wind, we hatched a plan to launch a main street focused M&A boutique.
Entrepreneurs signing a personal guaranty for the most important transaction of their lives deserved the best.
When we met @Sam_Rosati a few months later, I think his first reaction was something along the lines of "I've been waiting years for someone to build a firm like this."
And just like that...the idea was instantly validated with one of the most trustworthy voices in ETA.
What we didn't know at the time was how how much this would change our lives.
Since that date 4 years ago we have:
▪️Added appx. 20 team members
▪️Closed over 375 deals with over $1.75B in enterprise value!
▪️Been published and recognized in Forbes, Bloomberg, Yahoo! Finance, and more
▪️Won various awards, including for law firm innovation and @SMB_Attorney as managing partner of the year in Florida
▪️Dethroned every white shoe law firm in America to become the #1 M&A law firm in Texas by deal count
I'm incredibly grateful to have partners like @SMB_Attorney and @Sam_Rosati, along with an incredible team of lawyers and staff that have bought into the vision to become the #1 lower-middle market law firm in America.
We're well on our way and I can't wait to see what the next 4 years bring! 🚀🚀🔥🔥

I got raw with my talk at @SMB_ash.
Told stories I’ve never shared publicly.
If even one person left with more fire than they came in with, it was worth it.
Saw some great friends, met some sharp new people.
Awesome event.
Before we start posting live updates (starting Wednesday), here is the rest of our lineup! Quite a few will be on the SMBash stage for the first time. As the word gets out about ETA and SMB ownership, folks that have been in this space for years step up to share their industry knowledge.
So, who haven't we mentioned yet? Let's get to it!
Jacob Hall will be our keynote speaker Friday morning! Don't sleep in! Following that we have a packed schedule, ending at 2:30 so attendees can make their way home for a restful weekend. Don't forget to look over your notes and reflect on everything you learned!
Thanks to all of our amazing panelists, we can't wait to learn from you! @justinroffmarsh , Joseph Cabrera, @SuccessWithJake , @JermanMichael , Danny Payne, @chasemurdock , @SMB_Attorney , and @AdamMarkleySMB .

My wife just passed her US citizenship exam.
She moved here from Canada 7 years ago, raised 3 kids, and passed it on the first try.
Meanwhile I’ve been here 41 years and couldn’t tell you half of what she studied.
Couldn’t be more proud. Welcome home, babe. 🇺🇸

Every year we say it—and here we are saying it again: this event would not exist without our sponsors.
The companies supporting SMBash understand that the strength of the ETA and SMB communities comes from the support and education we offer searchers and operators. And it’s through all of our collective effort that our economy stays strong, our neighbors have jobs, and businesses continue to meet the needs of our cities and states.
So a huge shoutout to Axial, @smblawgroup, @firstib, Amplēo, @Hollywellteam , @PIONEERCAPADV, Byline Bank, Appletree Business Services @patrickdichter , @systemsixbooks, NewCo Risk @MrJoshFro @andyharbut , PPS Solutions, @PreferredData , and Elite Video @SuccessWithJake

Only six and a half weeks until SMBash 2026!
Sponsors are being locked in.
Speakers are almost finalized.
The meals have been chosen.
And lanyards are at the ready.
A quick reminder: SMBash isn’t a huge conference.
We intentionally cap attendance so the room stays intimate, the networking stays useful, and the connections you make are real.
If you’re planning to come, don’t wait too long to grab your ticket.

Great week for our event sales team!
Over $364k in new contracts signed since Friday.
Here's what's actually working. Steal all of it:
— Respond in minutes, not hours. By the time our competitor sends a quote, we’re already talking to the potential client.
— Send visuals, not spreadsheets. Renderings and past event photos let the client see themselves in the space before they sign.
— Over-communicate the process. When a client feels like you’ve done this a thousand times, anxiety disappears and trust takes over.
— Anchor high, deliver higher. Most clients don’t know what’s possible. So show them, and they’ll find the budget.
— Follow up like your rent depends on it. One proposal and hope is not a strategy.
— Lead with curiosity, not pricing. Ask about their goals, their audience, the impression they want to leave. Partner > vendor.
— Let your past work sell for you. Disney, Google, NFL - a well-placed case study builds instant credibility.
— Remove friction from signing. Digital contracts, clear terms, simple “yes” path. The easier it is to say yes, the faster they will.
Biggest lesson I keep relearning: people don't buy the service. They buy the feeling that they're in good hands. Everything on this list comes back to that.

Old guys know sales and relationships.
Young guys know tech and marketing.
You need both to win.
My buddy's dad built connections over 25 years that landed them a 104K hotel deal.
But without Twitter and modern marketing, they'd be stuck at 2021 revenue.
The principles from decades ago still work.
The tactics have completely changed.
Stack both and you're going to build a huge business.
