I have honestly lost count of the number of times I have thanked the person who came up with the little arrow on the fuel indicator! That person was Jim Moylan, an engineer (of course!) at Ford. wsj.com/business/autos/ford-…

BE-7 Lunar lander engine lookin’ good!
With rocket engines, boring is good. To that end, please enjoy this 1,030-second (17+ min!) BE-7 engine burn. This test represents the Apogee Raise Maneuver or ARM burn for our Blue Moon Mark 1 Lunar lander, plus margin, the longest burn required by the mission to reach the Moon. You may have noticed that the engine for this test does not have a nozzle. BE‑7 is tested in both vacuum and atmospheric conditions. This test was at  GEEx—our atmospheric test position in West Texas.

Excellent article (unlocked) on twin crises at Boeing and Intel. One thought strongly resonates: "Their culture evolved to prioritize financial performance over engineering excellence, which also brought down another manufacturing icon, General Electric." tinyurl.com/yc29up7t

a mind boggling amount of work went into the world around us. I can't believe anything works at all. It's actually remarkable, shocking, absurd. Us humans. We really figured it out

Pale Blue Dot is a photo of Earth that was taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990 from a distance of about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) as it was leaving our solar system. This is what Carl Sagan said about the photo: "Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor, and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”

Water plumes larger than our moon! Wow!
Daily hydration reminder 💧 Webb spotted a massive water emission from Saturn's moon Enceladus, spanning over 6000 miles and gushing out at 79 gallons per second. (Webb's data shows Enceladus as a white pixel. Compare its size to the water jet below!) go.nasa.gov/42fQbkK

If you put some ink on a leaf, you obtain a ink propelled boat, using the Marangoni effect. The ink has a lower surface tension than water and its flow provides thrust to push the boat forward [more: buff.ly/2tnyzW6] [📹 buff.ly/424kxYt]

Strongly agree
While casting shade on @elonmusk for what he’s done, is doing, or will do, try to pause & remember that he made electric cars a normal thing in society and he commercialized space — for cargo, satellites, & people. Count him among those who are inventing civilization’s future.

A brilliant mind. What a loss! "... she left physics to raise her four children in support of Marshall’s career. Los Alamos was her last professional experience. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1978." #WomensHistoryMonth , #HPC , #physics
A key algorithm used by scientists who work with numbers is the Monte Carlo method, published in 1953. A crucial co-author, the promising Arianna Rosenbluth of @LosAlamosNatLab, left physics soon after to raise kids and support her husband's career. #HPC aps.org/publications/apsnews…
