NEW: UnitedHealth Group's Optum bought up behavioral health clinics across the country, then closed many of them while expanding virtual mental health businesses it already owned and invested in. Our analysis found that more than half of the behavioral health entities UnitedHealth acquired either closed entirely or closed at least one office, resulting in the loss of half of the individual practice locations we examined across 21 states. Some key findings: • Optum shuttered its behavioral health services in New Jersey, closing roughly 90 offices and cutting 572 jobs. • It shut down in-person eating disorder clinics that patients called "lifelines." • It closed an autism-focused practice that inspired the Broadway musical How to Dance in Ohio.
