The Sustainable Conservation-sponsored Habitat Restoration and Enhancement Act (HREA) has been extended for another 5 years with the signing of AB 2045!
Restoration projects throughout California come in all shapes and sizes. Practitioners often need to move quickly to take advantage of seasonal conditions, available funding, construction windows, and opportunities to improve habitat. Restoration-specific permitting pathways, like the HREA, have long track records of ensuring measures are in place to reduce temporary impacts, while enabling long-term environmental gains.

"Four hundred forty-eight adult spring-run Chinook salmon swam back into the San Joaquin River Restoration Area in 2025, the highest number of captured returns recorded since the program began reintroducing juvenile fish in 2014. It is a number worth pausing on for a river that, for decades, had none of these fish at all."

With a potentially historic "super El Niño" sitting on the horizon, the ability of California's soils to infiltrate water becomes especially vital for flood prevention and agricultural resilience.
"It’s particularly important to have roots in the ground when heavy rains come, as forecasters predict could happen across the entire southern half of the US this winter," Carlisle writes in The Guardian.

On November 17, Recharge in Action: A Farmer Field Day will give growers an opportunity to learn about recharge basins, injection wells, subsurface recharge and on-farm recharge. Hosted by @FSCWI in partnership with Sustainable Conservation, the event will combine classroom learning with time in the field to show how different approaches can be applied.

What if there were a way to estimate manure nitrogen levels instantly and affordably? That’s the question at the heart of new research co-led by Sustainable Conservation that looked at whether electrical conductivity could serve as a potential proxy measurement for nitrogen concentrations in liquid manure.
The team is excited by the initial results of this research and is looking forward to seeing how this practical indicator could empower growers with real-time data to confidently put dairy manure nitrogen to beneficial use, while helping protect the groundwater and waterways that California communities depend on.
