What SHOULD preschool curriculums focus on to develop pre-literacy and literacy skills?
-Print awareness
-Building rich vocabulary and conceptual knowledge
-Early letter and sound awareness
-Social and emotional development
We’ve made such strides in promoting evidence-based curriculums at the grade school level, we can’t leave our preschoolers behind.

A past substack post that I don’t want to be overlooked:
Kindergarten now expects, and often demands, that students enter school with a solid foundation in pre-literacy and literacy skills.
We have the opportunity to develop these skills for our students in expansive 3k and 4k classrooms across NYC- but Creative Curriculum is not preparing students to be ready to meet the demands and expectations of kindergarten.

My latest post reminds us that readings levels, scores and logs all have their time and place- but for summer, we can just fall in love with reading⬇️

Great article by Sara Pixley in Kappan. She argues that materials alone are insufficient for reading reform, rather we need for just-in-time diagnosis; intervention explicitly aligned with Tier 1 instruction; curriculum connected pd kappanonline.org/beyond-adop…
Another congratulations to our partner school, Learning Through Play, for hosting @NYCMayor and @BarackObama last week!
Through our WOW collaboration, we've had the privilege of seeing LTP teachers' and students' hard work and enthusiasm for learning!
Bravo to the Learning through Play schools, headed by Carlyn Rahynes in the Bronx. She and her wonderful team of teachers, headlined in the NYT, are demonstrating how learning and literacy can go hand in hand through developmentally appropriate practice.nytimes.com/2026/04/18/nyreg…
We’ve known for decades now that most children need phonics lessons to learn to read well.
However, 21% of districts in NY are still using non-evidence-based curricula.
Other states have passed legislation to ensure their students learn to read. When is NY going to do the same?
When the curriculum moves too fast, even well-intentioned reforms can cause confusion. We have to ask ourselves, are we asking children to perform before they have had time to learn?
