One of three paintings for National Geographic's Picture Atlas of Our Universe, “Space Wheel Interior” depicts a Stanford torus, a ring-shaped habitat developed during the NASA-Stanford studies of the mid-1970s.
Syd takes us inside a deep-space settlement: a self-sustaining agrarian colony of ten thousand people. Shops, laboratories and offices line the high-rise spokes leading to the hub, while crops ripen in soilless racks tended by farmers in white uniforms. Floating mirrors gather sunlight, and moon rock shields the structure like tire tread.
For all its scale and technical precision, Mead makes life inside the wheel feel remarkably natural: people work, grow food, move through the city, and carry on beneath a horizon that curves endlessly before them.

Few artists have shaped how the movies imagine the future as profoundly as Syd Mead. Trained as an industrial designer, Mead brought a rare sense of plausibility to science fiction, creating cities, vehicles, machines, and entire environments that felt not just futuristic, but already lived in. His work on films including Blade Runner, TRON, and Aliens helped define the visual language of cinematic futurism for generations.
THE FUTURE ACCORDING TO SYD MEAD at The Roxie Theater (@roxietheater) celebrates the cinematic legacy of a true futurist visionary, timed to Syd Mead: Future Pastime, a major exhibition of his graphic work on view October 8 through December 17, 2026 at San Francisco’s Transamerica Pyramid Annex Gallery. Presenting Mead’s original artwork beyond his cinematic contributions, the exhibition offers another way into the extraordinary imagination behind these films.
Our selections move from the neon architecture of Blade Runner and the sleek digital world of TRON to the industrial hardware of Aliens and the cyberpunk world of Johnny Mnemonic. The program also reaches beyond the films Mead directly designed, with THX 1138 and Welcome II the Terrordome expanding the conversation around the futures he helped us imagine and the filmmakers who pushed those visions in radically different directions.

『#宇宙戦艦ヤマト』企画者である西﨑義展プロデューサーの祖父・水谷叔彦海軍機関少将（当方の高祖叔父）は、日清戦争の時期に英国・グリニッジ王立海軍大学で当時最新の海軍工学を修めた人物であり、呉海軍工廠整備にも尽力した。その呉海軍工廠で誕生した戦艦大和と、孫が世に送り出した『宇宙戦艦ヤマト』が大和ミュージアムで奇跡のコラボ。
何と喜ばしいことだろうか。

彼のデザインは、日本人には生み出せないものがある。
逆に言えば、日本人には親しみにくい一面もあると思う。
私は、シド・ミードさんのデザインは、画期的だと心底思う。
豪華客船、ヨット、ボート、ホバークラフト 〜 宇宙船 等 数多くの"生活できる船"を数十もデザインしていた #シドミード 。船を愛していた西崎プロデューサーがヤマトに起用したその審美眼。発注されたシドミードにとっては7年以上にも渡る数百枚もデザイン手掛けた最長のプロジェクトでした。
