Bashar al Assad shook hands and had a pretty blonde wife. He also slaughtered half a million Syrians. The debate about handshakes is tedious, ignorant, superficial. Focus on how/whether Sharaa and co apply governance, rule of law and build an inclusive state, handshake or not.

The obsession with al-Sharaa not shaking the hand of a female diplomat is misplaced because even if we don't like it, get it, or agree, it's his personal decision.
You know what you should care about? Any decision his govt takes imposing one way of doing things on other people.

Syrian social capital is once again stepping up to prevent bloodshed. In the #Christian Valley (Wadi Al Nasara), west of Homs, civic peace efforts have led to an agreement to expel armed militias from the area. As a result, the leader of the largest loyalist group in the region left the valley with his armed thugs. Ongoing efforts are underway to convince others to follow suit. Civic and religious leaders are playing a pivotal role, leveraging their historic ties across Syrian society. The mood in Damascus is tense. Shops are deserted except for grocery stores, where people are rushing to stock up. A drone was just shot over the city but it's not clear where it came from.
Damascus is surrounded by elite army units, including the 4th Division, the most equipped, trained, and combat-ready formation of the Syrian Arab Army -led by Assad's brother, Maher- and the Republican Guard, tasked with defending the president himself and key institutions.
The city is also saturated with Mukhabarat (secret police) with notorious branches distributed across most neighborhoods.
Iranian-backed militias, including fighters from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, are also stationed around the city and in some of its southern neighborhoods.
Many people feel all scenarios are possible, the ones they can imagine and those they can't, and they don't know what to hope for.

Thinking of all those who lost their loved ones in Syria, to death, torture or prison, for decades, under Assad regime. Also thinking abt French hostage, held in Beirut in 80's, Michel Seurat, who wrote best book on Assad barbarity and paid ultimate price, dying in captivity.

There are over 130,000 Syrians who are forcibly disappeared or missing--the vast majority by the Assad regime.

BREAKING - Since morning, I've been receiving distressing reports of Israeli Occupation Forces conducting military operations/assaults in northern West Bank. Reports of civilians, incl. medical personnel, arrested/detained or killed, are being verified.
Meanwhile, in Gaza, attacks on highly distressed civilians continue, amid severe shortage of food and other essential supplies.
As per ICJ deliberations, Israel must withdraw its troops from the occupied Palestinian territory; and it's time for the UN to deploy a protective presence to prevent further harm to the occupied Palestinian population.
