In June 1973, a woman might have opened Cosmopolitan and learnt from a psychologist that women scarcely had sexual fantasies. She might then have gone to a bookshop and found Nancy Friday’s My Secret Garden, published that same month, and discovered that other women had been having the very thoughts she had just been assured were beyond their capacity. Nancy Friday later recalled the coincidence with evident relish. It had taken her years of advertisements, interviews and correspondence to collect what a man with the proper credentials could dismiss in a few paragraphs. The disparity was worth a book in itself. The Continental News examines Nancy Friday’s life, the censorship of My Secret Garden and her defence of women’s sexual freedom, with a separate review of the book. A senior banking career usually invites speculation about the next promotion. Nikhil Maheshwari’s memoir turns attention towards a more surprising decision. A BITS Pilani alumnus who rose to become a Director at UBS, he retired from corporate employment at forty, when his experience and standing might reasonably have promised further advancement. The Race Never Ends examines the corporate life that preceded that departure and the questions success had left unanswered. The temptation, with a woman whose profession supplies so many plausible romances, is to read every former husband as a clue to the next one. The public dates can be reported. The private workings of those marriages belong to the people who lived them. One of the pleasures of Marriage Story is that Johansson knows exactly how to play a woman who has tired of having her life narrated by somebody else. A TCN portrait of Scarlett Johansson, from Lost in Translation and Marvel to Prada, three marriages, two Oscar nominations and the disputes that made headlines. thecontinentalnews.net/scarl… #ScarlettJohansson #BlackWidow #Hollywood

In a splendid gathering in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi blessed the marriage of R. K. Martand Singh, grandson of Dr Karan Singh and great-grandson of Maharaja Hari Singh, to Rhea Badal, daughter of Punjab politician Manpreet Singh Badal. Behind the bridal finery stood nearly two centuries of princely ambition, dynastic marriages, Partition, political rivalries and the extraordinary survival of India's royal families in a republic that abolished their privileges but never quite ceased to be fascinated by them. The Continental News - Society & Heritage Desk explores the splendour, power, Partition and dynastic ties behind the royal celebration. thecontinentalnews.net/modi-… #RoyalWedding #DograDynasty #KaranSingh #NarendraModi #JammuKashmir
