5 Things All Real Jays Fans Know About: Nathan Lukes 1⃣Two-Way Player in High School The Sacramento, California native played shortstop and was dominant as both a starting and relief pitcher. In his senior season, he hit .450 across 28 games with only three strikeouts over the course of the season. He also posted a 5-0 record over 10 games as a pitcher with a 0.62 ERA, four complete games, one shutout, and one save. 2⃣From College Walk-on to Record Holder Lukes started his college career as a walk-on at Sacramento State (CSU) (the same university program of Blue Jays legend and this weekend’s inductee into the new Hall of Excellence - Buck Martinez). His former college head coach, Reggie Christiansen, recalled that Lukes was an extremely undersized, skinny middle infielder (5-10, 150 lbs) who had to rely entirely on his work ethic to survive. His elite contact skills and durability eventually forced coaches to keep him in the lineup, leading to his eventual transition to the outfield. He went on to hit leadoff, earn a scholarship, grow to a solid 5-11, 180 lbs, and set the program record for most career hits (244) by the time he was done. 3⃣A Long and Patient Minor League Journey Drafted in the 7th round by Cleveland, Nate spent 8 full seasons in the minors (Cle and TB) before receiving a non-roster invite from the #BlueJays in 2023 and making Toronto's Opening Day roster - at 28 years old. Lukes reportedly almost retired from professional baseball, after welcoming his first child in November 2021, he told his wife he would give the game one more year before focusing entirely on being a dad. Shortly after that, Ross Atkins called to inform him he had been added to Toronto's 40-man roster. 4⃣First Full Season was 2025 - at 31 It’s hard to believe that 2025 was Lukes’s first full MLB season – at 31 years old. He was of course a central figure in the #BlueJays' 2025 run to the World Series, batting .318 in the postseason, and driving in the game-winning run to clinch the ALDS victory over New York. 5⃣ Elite Skills Lukes has quietly established himself as one of the most consistent contact hitters in MLB. He finished the 2025 season ranking fifth in the AL in contact rate at 86.1%, the 94th percentile for lowest whiff %, and 91st percentile for lowest strikeout %. This season he also finds himself in the conversation for the AL Gold Glove in right field, sitting in the 98th percentile for Arm Value, 80th percentile for Range, and 86th percentile for Arm Strength. 🤘
