NEWS RELEASE: Supreme Court agrees to hear government's Emergencies Act appeal
TDF Executive Director, Mark Joseph, said: "Two courts have now examined the same record and reached the same conclusion: there was no national emergency as defined by relevant statutes. The government's central argument - that judges should defer to Cabinet's belief that an emergency exists - would reduce the Act's safeguards to a formality. The "reasonable grounds" upon which the invocation is based must refer to objective factors giving rise to the subjective belief of Cabinet ministers; otherwise there are no restrictions on invoking an emergency under the Act. We're hopeful that the Supreme Court will take the opportunity to rule that emergency powers are bounded by law."
TDF will follow the appeal closely and report on the hearing once it is scheduled.

We had many engaging conversations with students, and were encouraged to see several faculty members and professors approach us in support of this initiative.
A common concern raised throughout the day was the growing culture of self-censorship and the increasing intolerance for open and civil debate within higher education.
Too many people feel afraid to speak their minds, voice dissenting opinions, or engage in meaningful discussions for fear of the consequences. Students and faculty members feel increasingly discouraged from speaking up when they disagree.
Universities and colleges should be places where ideas can be challenged, perspectives can be explored, and respectful disagreement is welcomed. We need more dialogue, more debate, and less censorship.
Freedom of expression is essential to our ability to learn, grow as individuals, strengthen our society, and move forward together in a productive way.
It’s time to bring open and civil discourse back to our campuses. 🇨🇦

NEWS RELEASE: Crown withdraws criminal charge against Pastor Jeffrey Sapocinik
Fourteen months after his arrest for street preaching, Pastor Sapocinik is free to share his faith in public, with no conviction and no criminal record.
TDF Litigation Director Adam Blake-Gallipeau stated:
“My client spent fourteen months under a criminal charge arising from peaceful street preaching. He leaves with no conviction and no criminal record. He is free to peacefully preach his faith in public - a right guaranteed under our Charter to all Canadians. Public areas have always been places where Canadians speak and sometimes argue about ideas: criminal charges are a poor response to these arguments.”
